Product Description

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon: Raising the Bar for Tables Under $500 Now Ships with the Award-Winning Ortofon 2M Red "In the ways that analog trumps digital, I'm confident the Carbon will sonically outperform any cheap CD player, particularly in terms of musical flow and general warmth. Pair it with a Bellari tubed phono preamp and play the combo for a kid weaned on MP3s and he or she is likely to start bawling. Literally. The sense of depth and spaciousness plus the image stability is impressive. Most highly recommended. I don't know what else comes close for $399." - Michael Fremer, Stereophile Pro-Ject's innovative Debut line redefined what an affordable turntable could deliver. Pro-Ject has now once again challenged convention with the Debut Carbon, offering even better performance at an accessible price. The upgrades over the Debut III are numerous, including the addition of an 8.6" completely carbon fiber tonearm that increases stiffness while decreasing unwanted resonances. This results in a higher fidelity presentation of your treasured recordings. Fitted to the carbon fiber arm is a true high-end cartridge, the 2M Red by Ortofon. This arm/cartridge combination is quite capable of exceptional tracking and recovery of the musical nuance found within the records grooves. This excellent upgrade takes this analog package to a higher performance level. "The Debut Carbon nails the basics: dynamic shading and speed constancy. The essentials of what we call 'rhythm and pace' are impressive. Whether for first-time turntable buyers or anyone wishing to enjoy high-quality LP playback without spending a lot of money, Pro-Ject's Debut Carbon is a great way to go." - Wayne Garcia, The Absolute Sound The attractive, piano-gloss finished, resonance-reducing MDF plinth supports a heavier and wider diameter low-resonance platter for smoother rotation and lower wow and flutter. Pro-Ject Debut Carbon (RED) Belt-drive Turntable Review

I recently purchased a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon (red) through another source only because Amazon didn't have one available at the time. Otherwise, I would have purchased it through Amazon, my preferred source for just about everything.

From the reviews I read on line, you would think this was God's own turntable, and while I think it's good, I would stop short of describing it that way. It does its job very well, and the sound is fabulous, thanks mostly to the supplied first class cartridge. The glossy red paint job is very cool - sure to impress your friends. And I can detect absolutely no speed variations. So, for its fundamental purpose, this turntable delivers the goods.

However, there are a few things about it that did not impress me as much. First, it's smaller and lighter weight than I expected. That's not necessarily a bad thing, just different from expectations. Also, the power is supplied through a separate transformer (made in China) that plugs into the wall outlet. I realize they build them that way to account for different line current in different countries, but it seemed like a somewhat cheap solution. Also, the device is too large to use in the switched outlet on the back of my receiver, which was a disappointment.

The hinged dustcover is not impressive. It works, but it's rather crude in its design and quality - acceptable, but not what you'd expect in a product of this price or from a similar product from Asia. Fortunately, this is the only aspect of the product that shows its communist factory roots.

The anti-skating is extreme, and I can't help wondering if the design was carried over unchanged from the previous model that did not have the super lightweight carbon fiber tone arm. Even at its lightest setting (there are only 3), lowering the tonearm requires "aiming" it about of an inch to the inside of the record in order to hit the target groove due to significant drift. I have found that there is no loss of sound quality by not using the anti-skating, and it's much easier to operate that way.

The cables carry the signal very well. I tried swapping them out with some excellent Ultralink cables, and I found no difference in sound quality. However, the supplied cables are rather loose fitting, and unlike most premium cables, there is no way to adjust the tightness.

Finally, I am impressed with the state-of-the-art carbon fiber tone arm, but I also worry about eventually changing out the cartridge. With their tiny nuts and bolts, that's a real chore even with a removable head shell - should be much worse with a one piece tonearm like this. Fortunately, it's not necessary to change them often, and definitely not necessary to change out the supplied Ortofon 2M Red - an outstanding cartridge that delivers better-than-CD sound.

I don't mean to discourage anyone from buying this product, and in fact, I like it a lot and would recommend it. But other reviews, both from users and professional sources, seem to suggest that it's an incredible bargain at 400 bucks, and I'm not sure I can say that. It's a big upgrade in performance from a mid level table from the 70's, but I don't think you're getting anything more than you are paying for.
