Humminbird 4089501 598Ci HD SI Combo Side Imaging/Down Imaging DualBeam Fishfinder and GPS Review

I have owned this unit for 7 months and I have used it extensively for 2 months. I was not new to Humminbird units so I was already very familiar with most of its settings. The unit has worked very well and I love the compatibility with the LakeMaster card features. If you have good eyes the screen size will not be a problem although I'll admit bigger is better. It only has 1 SD card slot so if you have a maps card (do not use the built in maps, they are useless) you will have to take it out and put in an empty card every time you want to save a waypoint with a screenshot or anytime you want to make a recording. The biggest disappointment I've had with this unit is its slow sonar scrolling speed. Humminbird calls it Chart Speed. This is the speed at which the objects go from one side of the screen to the other. Even at its maximum speed setting of 10 it takes about 45 seconds for an object to go from one side of the screen to the other. This is before and after the latest software upgrade. What this means is that it is difficult to match the boat speed and the slowest my boat goes is about 3 mph. If your boat is going faster than your chart speed you will only see very large structures using SI or DI. I called Humminbird and they confirmed that that is the chart speed on one of their units too so there is no solution and probably won't be. FOR COMPARISON PURPOSES ONLY I tested some other units. If you try a 798 unit, it only takes about 25 seconds for an object to go across the screen (yes, at the same chart speed of 10). That's almost twice as fast! An 898 only takes about 12 seconds. So, clearly there are differences and Humminbird will not tell you that this unit is much much slower. I tried it at the front of the boat while using the trolling motor and that way I was able to go much slower and was able to see much more detail that way but as a main console unit it's too slow to see the details that I have seen with faster units. Also, you will never get anywhere close to the speed shown in display mode (kind of misleading). As soon as you switch to simulation mode or regular mode it slows way down. I'm a Humminbird fan so no pun intended but this did not measure up to other units.
