Apple Mac Pro MD771LL/A Desktop (NEWEST VERSION) Review

People should understand that the Mac Pro can be updated to USB 3.0 by purchasing a PCIe card. An Esata6G card can also be added which is faster than USB 3.0 but can,t power peripherals but as this is a desktop computer that should not be too much of a problem as power is close to hand. Also upgrading to a PCIe SSD card is one of the best investments to make with the Mac Pro this will give a super fast boot drive, and by-passes the problem of the HD bays only being 3G in fact the PCIe SSD is faster than an SSD 6G in a 6G compatible computer. OWC can provide 48Gb RAM for the 6 core and up to 96 for the 12 core. 24 Gb is the cheapest option for RAM 3x8Gb sticks (for the 6 core) and for most people this would probably be sufficient, if you are feeling rich go for 3x 16Gb. As you can see there is life left in the Pro and despite its age its still a good bet compared to the latest iMac (which for some tasks IS faster but for some others its not) PLUS it's not designed for the user to make any upgrades to hard drives on any model but the ram is user upgradable on the 27' model. Software that will work with 6 or 12 cores will still be better on the Pro and remember this computer is large for a good reason, heat dispersal.
If you are looking for a machine that can have a PCIe boot drive 5 HD bays (there are 4 std bays but the second optical bay if not used can have a 3.5/2.5" HD/ssd caddie put in or a 2.5" HD/SSD plugged into the cable and just hang there.
At this time (Feb 2013) i do not believe there is a Thunderbolt solution for the Mac Pro and probably there never will be but this is not such a big deal as the alternative solutions mentioned above give very good connection flexibility.
Edit: the sweet spot for photography is the 6 core 3.33 as photoshop only saves using one core so a fast one is quite important, also photoshop only makes good use of 4 cores on many operations but i believe video editing and 3D rendering is better on a 12core machine
I have become aware that OWC may soon be selling a PCIe SSD which has two Esata 6G ports built into the card which helps to free up other expansion slots for other uses.
