The quality of sound you get out of a receiver will always be dictated mostly by your speakers, so when buying an AVR you really want to concentrate on the features, and the power.

The HK AVR 1710 has cutting edge features, but also has a number of issues.

PROS:
1. Two HDMI outs (with 3D pass-through): If your setup includes multiple screens you can keep this hooked up to both simultaneously and easily switch between them. Especially useful though if you have abnormal viewing angles on 3D TVs and thus have two set up. Not necessarily useful to most people, but nice to have.

2. Future proof wireless connectivity (assuming it's close to an Ethernet connection): Bluetooth is built in, but once you connect the 1710 to your router you can use it to stream audio content via all the methods listed in the description. (Airplay, vTuner, etc.)

3. Option to set up with front height speakers, instead of surround back (I find this provides a fuller surround experience)

4. True second zone sound. There are two ways to set this up, either a two channel second zone powered by the receivers internal amplifier (which makes this into a 5.1 system) or even better, through the Zone 2 out you can connect to an external amplifier, thus preserving your 7 channel sound (which also means you can easily power more speakers, depending on the strength of the amplifier.) In either case you can send different inputs to each zone, with some limitations.

5. HDMI ARC (on the first HDMI output): This means the first output acts as both an output and an input, i.e. it can transfer digital sound from the TV to the AVR. Which means you can use your internet connected TV to watch web apps, or use your TVs cable tuner to provide the source audio to the AVR. Also this means you can (potentially) workaround the HK's lack of legacy inputs.

6. Lots of power: great sound that can drive your speakers loudly enough to thoroughly annoy your neighbors.

7. Other assorted features listed in the description. The AVR 1710 is full of advanced features for connectivity, but I don't want to rehash what is already clearly listed in the item description. If you have a question about a specific feature feel free to ask in the comments.

CONS:
1. Doesn't ship with the manual: Just the quick start guide, you have to go online and print the full manual yourself, which frankly, strikes me as a little cheap on the part of HK.

2. No standby HDMI pass-through: This means that if you have your sources plugged into your receiver you always have to power on the receiver to watch/listen to them, you cannot opt to just use your TV's audio (which you might do if the kids were sleeping)

3. No Wi-Fi connection: Requires a hard Ethernet connection via cat5 cable before you can set up airplay, or internet radio. Which means the receiver needs to be placed near either a router a powerline or some similar device.

4. You can only stream audio from your apple/android device: whether connected wirelessly, or via the front USB port. I was hoping you could use the USB port to play video with certain codecs, but this is not the case.

5. No component video inputs (YPP): This will be particularly relevant to people with older HD capable components like various X-box 360s, and to people who have very long cable runs between their receiver and TV (HDMI may lose significant quality on longer runs, whereas good analog cables can run for 200 feet without loss.) You may be able to work around this by running all your cables to the TV and then an HDMI out from the TV to the ARC HDMI input.
And last and perhaps most:

6. EXTREMELY WEAK remote design:
a. Two buttons for power (not sure why?)
b. No dedicated TV controls (you have to switch to TV every time you want to turn it on or off.
c. Absolutely no dedicated input or tv/video button that could be used to change the video source on the TV (if for example you have
component cables plugged into the TV, and need to switch between that and the AVR source).
d. No button for switching on Night Mode, you have to go to the menu and change the setting each time.
e. Overall poor design: Operation isn't intuitive and requires pressing way more keys than necessary, or different keys than you might
assume.

In summation the HK 1710 offers some great high end features and a lot of power, but it is held back by its remote and limited analog connectivity options. If you have a universal remote you like and you don't need component video connections then by all means, this is a great receiver. However if these or standby HDMI pass-through are features you desire then look elsewhere.
