Shuttle LGA1155/Intel Z77/500W Mini Gaming PC Barebone SZ77R5 (Black) Review

This is not my first shuttle build, and while I like the combination of features, the compact form factor, and the fit and finish of everything in one...I think Shuttle has missed the mark just a bit with the R5 chassis. 99% of the design is great...but seriously...the door and button for the ODD is very third rate. If it were possible to remove the fold down door and just have the ODD there, I wouldn't have deducted a star, as it is, I am stuck with something that I believe a third grader could have done better with.

The ODD screw-up behind me, the rest of the build quality is great. As far as included accessories...I would have preferred that they included right angle SATA cables as opposed to the straight connectors that are included. The only other issue is the USB 3.0 internal connector/header is directly under the drive cage. The header on the MB doesn't have a socket, only bare pins, so the cable flexes and I'm worried the strain of the cable might bend the pins on the MB.

On another thought, it's nice to have the Mini PCI-E and M-SATA sockets, but it would be nice if Shuttle offered a solution for adding WI-FI antennas. They left knockouts in the back of the case for antenna jacks (three of them)...but they don't offer a kit to wire it. According to my measurements, you would need about 12" to 14" of internal cabling so as not to interfere with components and leave just enough slack on the cables (especially if you intend to use a dedicated graphics card). Problem is, try finding headers in that length (most I find on here are 3" to 9" long).

I know, the wireless headers are nothing for a seasoned builder (someone who likes to mod cases), however people who buy a Shuttle Bare-bone aren't usually looking to do much modding - and even then, they prefer to have a kit designed specifically for the Shuttle (usually by Shuttle).

All of that aside, mine started up fine with a CMOS error (no biggie...every first power up has to enter the BIOS first), however, it can be a bit confusing...the options tell you to hit F2 or DEL to enter setup or hit F1 to continue....on mine hitting F2 or DEL had no effect...you have to hit F1 first, THEN hit F2 or DEL...I'm sure it states this somewhere in the manual, but getting a builder to read the manual before the first power on is like getting a guy to stop and ask for directions.

Windows 7 SP1 loaded fine, and with the exception of the sound card, almost all of the drivers had to be loaded from the included driver disk (not even the LAN worked with the standard Windows included drivers). I would recommend getting the latest drivers from Shuttle, since the driver disk has some out-dated versions.

All in all, it's a good little system, great for day to day uses, but I would strongly caution someone that uses the ODD on a regular (daily) basis - really, the door mechanism is that bad. Shuttle, if you're listening, Fix this for future designs, or at least give us the option to remove the door and just have the bare drive.
