The AVR 3700 was an easy system to set up, with an intuitive ODS setup that made installation a breeze. For what it did during my initial evaluation simply blew my last system (Onkyo TX-NR616) away. All my HDMI connections were solid and the worked as advertised.My key issues with the HK AVR 3700 system came in the following areas:
1) Airplay "break-in". It's impossible to Airplay in Zone-2 while watching TV, or doing anything else for that matter in Zone 1. Airplay either breaks in over whatever you're doing in zone-1, or stops working in zone-2 altogether when zone-1 is switched back to an alternate source. This may not be an issue for folks who have media that's all contained on a DLNA compliant source, but for folks looking to stream from the iDevices, the airplay functionality doesn't cut it, if you want to do things over different zones.
2) Documentation/App Support/Web Presence. Try finding the AVR-3700 from the home page, it's simply not there. One has to search google to find the pages linked on the HK website. (Is this not supposed to be a flagship product?). HK's presence is practically non-existant in the app-store. When compared to the control apps put out by Yamaha and Onkyo, HK looks like a third rate player. Their "remote" app is nothing more than a picture of a remote, which frequently can't find the device.
3) The remote was shoddy, and poorly put together. Buttons frequently stuck, and required a multiple attempts to do most functions. (Even after discarding the factory stock batteries included). When I'm spending nearly $1K on a receiver, give me a decent remote!
While HK support is friendly, patient, and helpful, and I probably would have replaced the remote with something higher end anyway, the lack of multi-zone airplay was really a ship sinker.
For what it's worth, I spent a few hours at the stereo store over the weekend evaluating various systems, and the Yamaha Aventage system I was sure I was going to end up with didn't do any better with multi-zone Airplay than the HK system.
In the end, I returned my AVR 3700, and going with a SONOS system that had true multi-zone support for media that didn't involved directly interfacing with the OSD. The SONOS app interface was beautifully intuitive, and has replaced my need for a receiver altogether for a comparable price. With some patience in an afternoon, and speaker wire, I took my two zone home system. (Home Theater - Living Room/Upstairs) to a four zone system. (Living Room/Kitchen/Patio/Master Bedroom) that I can split/group in any combination I like.
