Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50mm Riflescopes Review

Since I wear glasses I should mention that I have some difficulty getting the correct distance and "picture" consistently. Have moved scope again for the third time and each has gotten better.

It does seem more sensitive to eye distance, even at the lower magnifications. I have found the eye relief distance wll out of harm's way even at 24. While I have read some reviews complaining of clarity at 24x mine performs flawlessly at that setting. Just remember to take about an inch less eye relief at 18-24x and you will find clarity all the way out.

Interestingly I have found it relatively easy to find the right eye relief distance at the higher magnifications. I think this indicates my difficulty getting the right distance at low resolutions is related more to finding a good cheek weld further back on the stock at lower magnifications. The high quality of the glass makes finding that spot at 24x relatively simple.

In general I am very happy with this scope. If it was $200 less it would be a steal - I only give 5 stars to excellent performance and value. I am already a huge fan of FFP and mil/mil matched adjustments. Unfortunately I have had to re-sight a few times already because of my new base (see note below).

It has been a long time since the last time I bought both a new rifle, scope and mounts thirty years ago. While I haven't shot seriously at a range since Marine Corp sniper school in the early 70's my plan was to buy the best quality scope I could afford so I can focus on re-establishing my skills. After a couple hundred rounds I am convinced I made a good choice with this scope.

Note: I did buy a DNZ one piece mount and followed their directions perfectly and have had to remount it three times. Twice with the rings working loose and bumping the magnification ring with the base coming loose the third time.

While DNZ is adamant not to use blue locktite if you follow their recommendations I would highly recommend using a decent torque wrench and setting everything at 30 inch pounds not 25 as they recommend. My platform is a Savage 12VLP in 308 Win.
