PiSECTOR Cellular & Landline All in one Wireless Security Alarm System DIY kit with Dual Network for Simultaneous Double Protection-GSM06-M27 Review
I recently switched my land line to VoIP and found compatibility issues with my current alarm company's system which complains about the phone line not being detected occasionally. After shopping around for upgrades to systems which reliably support non-land line, I found that I have to pay a good amount of money for the system upgrades plus 50 - 60% increase in my monthly alarm monitoring bill. This PiSector is a nice solution as it provides both GSM and phone line (which works for VoIP phone) support with very minimal monthly costs. The system is also packed with a lot of nice features which I would share some details below. The main draw back with this product is the poorly written installation instructions. The support service is great in providing help I needed to completed the installation.
Here is a summary of the key products features
- Fully programmable zones. The systems support 10 zones with a maximum of 10 devices (wireless switches, smoke alarm, motion detectors etc) per zone. This product comes with 10 pre-programmed wireless contacts, 5 on Zone 1 and 5 on Zone 2. If you want to re-programm them to fit your house's layouts, you could either delete the Zones and reprogram each of the contacts or reset the system's configuration to the factory default mode (which was the option I used). The instruction manual did not specify such procedures clearly. For each Zone, we could set them in a variety of ways (such as delayed alarm, siren enable, zone category etc)
- Remote key fops which allow us to arm and disarm by simply pressing a button. You could also arm and disarm the alarm remotely by calling the phone number associated with the system.
- auto-calling features. These are the most important features and they work very well. We can pre-programmed upto six phone numbers to dial automatically if the alarm is triggered. There is a built-in recording which announces the zone which triggered the alarm. You can also record your own message if you like and the system can also send SMS messages. The only drawback I see so far is that the system does not announce multiple zones if such were triggered. My VoIP line works very well as a telephone line input. I also tried the sim card from my iPhone 3G which has no problem. There are several cost effective options for GMS dialing including mobalfreedom (no monthly charge nor expiration), T-mobile and ATT's pay per call services. Both T-mobile and ATT's pay per call plans have an expiration period which would cancel your phone number if not used or renewed every 3 months unless you set up your account with automatic renewal.
- remote siren. This produces very loud sound and requires no direct wiring of the unit. However, the instruction manual did not provide any details on how to program it. Here are the steps : set the control panel to wireless control, select wireless siren and then transmission. We would need to set the remote siren in set up mode by plugging and unplugging it from the power 3 times (you would hear 4 beeps to confirm). Once it is in the set up mode, press enter on the transmission in the control panel to connect to the wireless siren. Unplug the wireless siren for 10 seconds and exit the control panel mode. We should be all set after this is done
All in all, this is a nice alternative solution if you are looking for an alarm system which has automatic calling capability instead of relying on monitoring services.
