HP Promo ZR2740w 27-inch LED Backlit IPS Monitor Review
I settled on this monitor after debating for a bit on a few different aspects, including the monitor size and manufacturer. After settling on the ZR2740w that was ordered from Amazon for me as an early Christmas present, I definitely came away happy and not disappointed, although there are definitely some aspects to get used to for anyone upgrading from something smaller. Some quick points:-An IPS monitor was a must for me, and this was a bit cheaper then the Dell U2711, so this won out.
-The ultra high resolution takes some getting used to. I came from a 22" monitor at 1680x1050, so the jump to 2560x1440 was quite a difference. Text and window sizes are pretty small at this resolution, which can take some adjustment. Other 27" monitors with TN panels typically use 1920x1080, so be aware that this is even higher and sharper.
-I don't have any major gaming issues. It's no 120hz gaming panel, but as a gamer I'm able to play Modern Warfare 3 or Starcraft 2 without any major ghosting issues. Some more keen eyed people might be bothered, but it's perfectly fine for me.
-The anti-glare coating on the monitor is noticable, which leaves kind of a shimmering effect if you're looking at a white screen. Some might not notice, but I do. However, i'm getting used to it so it's not that big of a distraction.
-The monitor has no on screen display. That's a little weird to me, as it leaves very little adjustment ability for those trying to tweak color and contrast. The buttons only control brightness. Although I'd say the monitor looks very good to me out of the box, so this isn't a huge issue.
-Only Displayport and Dual Link DVI ports are on this screen. This shouldn't be a big deal for anyone looking for this sort of monitor, but something to keep in mind if you were hoping for HDMI.
Anyway, i'm definitely happy with the monitor. There are some quirks, but nothing major and HP has been incredibly solid with their monitors the last couple years to rival Dell. Playing games on such a large screen is incredibly immersive, and general work in Windows is absolutely wonderful. Watching high definition video is fantastic on this as well. It's hard to go back to my dual 22" monitors at work after using this at home for a week; the size definitely spoils you!
UPDATE 10/17/2013: Just a quick update a couple years later. My monitor started randomly shutting off during regular usage. The LED power light would go off, and it wouldn't turn back on right away. I was able to check the warranty online which is 3 years, emailed HP, they sent a technician out 2 days later to my apartment to replace the monitor completely. While i'm disappointed in the service, i'm pretty impressed at the quick turn around to fix the monitor.
