Garmin zumo 350LM 4.3-Inch Motorcycle GPS Review

The Zumo 350LM works fine as a GPS. But if you are expecting to connect to this Zumo GPS and a phone or other device, be aware that this model only connects to one device, and only to a "headset" type device.

If you expect to use this model like the other models of Zumo's, like the 660/665, the 350LM does not connect to anything other than one headset/helmet. Therefore the typical use, of connecting your phone to the GPS, and the GPS to your helmet, isn't going to work. But it is hard to find that out until you try, or call, or find the right thing to read. I was unable to find details on specific Bluetooth connections/capabilities of this unit until I ordered it and tried it. If you have questions about how it works, it is best to go to the Garmin site and download the user manual first. I have returned the 350LM and will try to find another unit that does what I need it to do (maybe the 660/665, or some other brand GPS).

As this Zumo looked like it was a completely new design (rugged, weatherproof, etc.), and perhaps the new direction for the Zumo family, I assumed Garmin would have migrated the features of the older units into the 350LM, but that is not the case. For the time being, at least as far as the family goes, the Zumo 350LM is the new low end model.

There are some odd things about how this model works too. All other Garmin's that I have used allow you to easily save an address or POI when you find it, but the Zumo (maybe for ease with gloves?) adds an icon with 3 bars ("menu") on almost every screen. When you find an address your options are to cancel, get info, or Go. In order to save what you found, you have to get info, then tap the 3-bar menu icon, then save. Quite a bit more clunky than the way a Nuvi works. Maybe this is Garmin's new UI for adding capabilities across all devices? I found it confusing, but maybe I would have gotten used to it if I kept the device.

4 stars for GPS and usability, but 2 stars for Bluetooth capabilities, so average = 3 stars.
