OmniMount Enclosed Rack System 27 Rack Spaces Review

This is a great rack. Before purchasing this rack I had a hard time finding out what size of gear it accommodates. Not even the manufacturer was able to provide exact specs, so here goes:

The two front and two rear rails are fully adjustable front to back (cage nuts are spaced in 20mm (0.8") increments, but the rails also have slots that allow fine adjustment down to the millmeter). FANTASTIC! Omnimount does not offer Z-mount support rails for heavy hardware, but thanks to the fact that the rails are adjustable, it is possible to use third party support rails, for example Hammond RASA16BK3.

The factory installation of the rails sets the distance from the glass door to the front rail to 56mm (2.2"). Front rail to rear door is 532mm (20.9"). If moving the cage nuts for the rails 2 steps forward to the forward-most position it is possible to achive room for up to 572mm (22.5") deep devices.

The back door has a horizontal reinforcement bar mid-way that is approximately 60mm (2.3") wide. The same goes for the top and bottom of the door. Consequently, the max depth is reduced by 20mm (0.8") for the bottom-most 1U, top-most 1U, and middle 2U spaces.

In the stock configuration the fans make a lot of noise. However, the original fans can be made nearly quiet for free if you don't mind reducing the air flow. All you need to do is to connect them in series. Originally the fans are wired in parallell. Both wires of each fan goes to Live and Neutral in the power connector.
To wire them in series, label the fans 1 and 2. Then label the two pins on the power connector A and B. Cut the wire that goes from Fan1 to A. Cut the wire that goes from Fan2 to B. (Cut the wires close to the connector and use insulation tape or new heat shrink to properly insulate the cut ends at the connector). Finally connect the two cut wire ends together (the ones that go to the fans, not the ones on the power connector). Voil ! Now the fans no longer sound like jet engines and it did not cost a cent!

My only complaint is that the fan tray had come loose in shippng and had scratched up the top shelf and one of the inner braces to the point that I have a few 5" long steaks of bare metal. However, since I'm going to remove the shelves and fill all rack spaces those scuffs won't be visible once all gear is in. The manufacturer should consider using longer screws, since the four 1/4" long screws that hold the fan tray in place apparently is not always sufficient to hold the tray in place during shipping. (The unit is otherwise very well packaged. The problem was that the unit "internally fell apart" since the screws holding the fan tray to the top apparently are not properly sized to survive rough shipping).

Update: I have now fully loaded all 27U of this rack with 450 pounds of amplifiers. After 6 months of use and rolling the heavily loaded rack back and forth dozens of times on medium pile carpet, I can conclude that the rack is extremely sturdy and I have no doubt it can handle the 750 lbs claimed in the specifications. It's really an amazing rack for the money paid. For those that need a heavy duty shelf for heavy gear, have a look at the Middle Atlantic VSA-1626 four post shelf.
