Netgear ReadyNAS 500 Series 516 Diskless 6-Bay Network Attached Storage (RN51600-100NAS) Review

I've owned 3 different NASes over the years, all from Netgear. The NV+, the Pro and now the new ReadyNAS 516.
I use it mainly for backups and for storing my photos. I take about 30-40 K photos every year (which adds about 1 TB a year). I do a little bit of streaming, sometimes use the iTunes server and I would like to use it for on-line access to my files (more on that later).

I added 6 pcs WD 3TB RED drives to the box. They are not reviewed here.

What is good?
Extremely fast. Much more quite than the old Pro model. New OS have many great new features.
5 year warranty.
Possibility to expand storage a lot (up to 85 TB I believe)!
Real time decoding of movies is new and pretty cool! With a Smart-TV you can stream MKVs directly to you TV. Love that you do not need to spend time manually converting files to the right format.
USB3 for quick backup.

What is ok?
Setup and configuration does take some time, but is not hard. Manual is ok, but some more details would help (now you would need to go to the ReadyNas forum to really understand how things work).
A little bit bigger than the pro.

What is not so great?
Firmware is still very new and there are some bugs left. There are also some features missing. But it's just a matter of time and release cycles are currently very fast.
ReadyNAS remote, sync and other service to access files from another location is still not working well. Compared to professional "drop box"-services the service on the NAS are painfully awkward and very slow (although my NAS is connected to a 100 Mbit fiber). For me the lack of support for viewing RAW-files is annoying.
Price-point is 100-200 USD too high compared to the 316.

Jury is still out on...
Teaming seems to work, but so far I did manage to create a scenario which adds any performance benefit.
Access rights and the new file system. Still did not quite get how this is working and manual is not giving much details. Time will tell.
Virus protection. No idea how well it works, but it's running.
I wish there would have been a feature to automate the move of data from an old NAS to a new and maintaining access rights, folder structure etc. Couldn't figure out how to do that easily.

Price vs. performance?
Price is always relative to value and in my case because I value my photo collection a lot price point is ok. But the price difference to the 316 model is a bit to high in my opinion. I can't compare to other vendors products since I did not try them.

Summary: all-in-all a great device with potential to become even better with new firmware releases. Highly recommended if you need a premium home NAS and it can also server small companies very well.
