Lenovo ThinkPad X230t 34352TU i7-3520M 2.9GHz 8GB 500GB 7200rpm Touch Tablet with Dock Review

I've been a huge fan of convertibles and the current trend of "tablets" a la iPad makes me rather sad. I find convertibles such as the x230t to be so much more useful and powerful.

Before the x230t, I've had a Dell xt and then a Dell xt2. I'm very glad I've decided to get the x230t instead of the xt3 this time around; the digitizer on the x230t is miles ahead of the N-trig on the Dells. The main complaint I have with the Wacom is that it doesn't do so well with the edges -- calibration is important and it does improve the performance, but even after doing so it's still not very responsive at the edges (makes scrolling a bit difficult with the mouse, but I've gotten used to touch scrolling).

In terms of performance, this little tablet packs quite the punch. With the i7, it's blazing fast compared to my old xt2. An SSD makes boot-up and down-time very snappy too -- I strongly recommend getting an SSD with this. Using an SSD makes the machine super quiet as well, and I have no heating issues whatsoever.

I was a little worried about the keyboard -- a lot of reviews were lambasting the "upgrade" Lenovo did. Having never used a Thinkpad before, the keyboard seems great to me! Only complaint here is the odd decision to swap Function and Control keys. I couldn't get used to that at all, so I turned on the BIOS option to swap them back.

The touchpad is very problematic however. Coming out of the box, it was non-responsive and jumpy. I've upgraded the drivers and turned off all the "features" of the ultranav and now it's better but still worse than any other touchpad I've used. On the other hand, it's a good thing the trackpoint is the best I've ever used, and I'm starting to get the hang of using it instead of the touchpad, but I'm not quite there yet.

In terms of looks, I find the black, functional, no-frills design of the x230t to be much more pleasing to me than the Macbooks. I hope they retain their design in the future rather than try to copy Apple.

Please keep up the x200t line! This seems a much better tablet than the Twist or the Helix.
