Thunderbolt technology is a revolutionary high-speed, dual protocol I/O technology designed for performance, simplicity and flexibility. Thunderbolt I/O technology lets you move data between high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices on a single, compact port. Both data and display signals can be sent and received at the same time through dual 10 Gbps channels. A single cable attached to one of the ports provides 2 channels able to achieve the 10 Gbps speeds flowing both ways simultaneously. A single Thunderbolt port supports hubs as well as a daisy chain of up to seven Thunderbolt devices. To improve bandwidth transmission, Thunderbolt has implemented two duplex (PCIe and DisplayPort) channels into the controller and each channel can provide full bi-directional performance.Areca ARC-8050 Thunderbolt RAID 8-Bay Review
After taking 28 hours to transfer 1.5TB of data from a pokey drobo (15MB second via fw800) this could not be more welcome! My solid state drive tops out at 500MB a second and the ARC 8050 seems to want to sail through this barrier (in a RAID 6 configuration). When you unplug the thunderbolt cable, the drive goes into sleep mode - it seems like it is off. When you plug the cable back in the unit wakes. The ARC 8050 is silent in sleep mode and has a moderate to low level of noise when it is on. The versatility to use your own desktop drives in this unit is so very welcome. I recently did a 16 channel hd multicam edit in Prem and it sailed through it. I only regret not buying this unit sooner. The speed and ease with which you can work with large video files through a fast, redundant drive is a game changer. The unit itself seems like a quality piece of gear. When you stock this enclosure with desktop drives, the per GB cost drops to less then .10 cents. Most of the consumer Reviews tell that the "Areca ARC-8050 Thunderbolt RAID 8-Bay" are high quality item.
