Pioneer Elite VSX-43 Review

I was looking for a receiver with AirPlay support that would handle all of the video sources I've got in my A/V cabinet, and the VSX-43 specs said it would do everything I needed. And the price offered by the seller was the best I could find. That was before I made the purchase.

After making the purchase and living with the unit for a few weeks, I'm really happy with the solution, and delighted with some of the features that I didn't think I'd even use. AirPlay works exactly as I'd hoped. All of my video sources are switched through the unit to the TV. The auto speaker setup and auto signal processing means I'm getting great sound from every different source. Add to that Pandora and other network straeming features, and I'm really pleased with the VSX-43.

And to add to my satisfaction, the seller and Pioneer tech support were great to work with. I thought I'd received a defective unit and the seller immediately sent me a return authorization. Luckily, I simultaneously sent a question to the Pioneer tech support folks to ask about the behavior I was seeing, and they responded with a solution (it turned out to be that their documentation didn't clearly describe the proper setup for my speakers / subwoofer configuration). So the return wasn't needed for that issue. But then there was another issue that seemed to indicate that the unit had a (very minor) problem, and this time the Pioneer tech support folks confirmed that the behavrior was incorrect. Again, the seller said "ship it back and I'll get Pioneer to fix it under warranty." I recalled that I'd had warranty service done on a Pioneer unit many years ago locally, so I asked if we could do things that way, and the vendor immediately sent the paperwork for me to get that done. So we saved the cost and hassle of shipping the unit back and I hand carried it to the warranty center here ... where they discovered that the "broken" feature was another poorly documented configuration setting.

So the bottom line is: great vendor, great product, not-so-great documentation from Pioneer ... but now that it is set up correctly, it does everything I'd expected and more.
