NEC MultiSync EA244WMI-BK 24-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor Review

The NEC EA244WMI-BK is exactly what I've been looking for: 24", 1920x1200, Good Viewing Angles, Decent Color Accuracy and Semi-Gloss (Some Anti-Glare but not so much that it's grainy or not enough that you see your own reflection). The only other monitor that came close was the Apple 24" Cinema Display which, to be honest, was really overkill for my use and had a glass (glossy) front. Below I compare the NEC EA244WMI-BK to the Apple 24" Cinema Display and the Dell U2412M, both of which I owned as I searched for the ideal monitor.

All three monitors, the Apple 24" Cinema Display, Dell U2412M and the NEC EA244WMI are very similar in Spec - 24", 1920 x 1200 Resolution, IPS Panels (Dell is e-IPS and the Apple H-IPS, the NEC I'm guessing is e-IPS based on the price).

Now for the differences:

Connectivity: The NEC and the Dell definitely win out on connectivity as the Cinema Display only has DisplayPort, which while I have a MacBook Air, I also repair Windows PCs and need to be able to hook-up computers with a variety of connections. The Dell features DisplayPort, VGA and DVI while the NEC has all of these and adds HDMI. In terms of connectivity, NEC has put in every port they could find. USB 2.0 connectivity is found on all three (3x USB on the Cinema Display and 4x USB on the Dell and NEC). The USB on all three works well - the Dell and NEC have no problem powering my external Buffalo DVD Drive with only one USB plugged in but cannot output enough power for the Apple SuperDrive. The Cinema Display is just the opposite, providing enough power for the SuperDrive but not enough for the Buffalo (there may be a different compatibility issue here).

Stand, External Appearance and Buttons: The NEC and Dell have no shortage of adjustability and buttons. Both coming with Tilt, Swivel, Pivot and Height adjustments and all adjustments have been more than adequate to find a comfortable position, not to mention, being able to rotate 180 for long documents is a big plus. The Cinema Display, however, only tilts vertically while you need phone books to adjust the height. Where the Cinema Display lacks in adjustability it makes up for in external appearance but I spend most of my time looking at what's showing on the monitor, not the monitor itself. Naturally, the NEC and Dell do not compete in external appearance (boring comes to mind) but, again, I mostly care about what's displayed on the monitor. The Dell features actual buttons while the NEC features touch-sensitive "areas" (the Cinema Display, in usual Apple fashion, has no buttons). Personally, I prefer actual buttons but I can live with touch-sensitive "areas" as both get the job done. One nice feature is that NEC will actually allow you to adjust the brightness of the blue power LED on the front (I turned it off because I find power LEDs slightly annoying).

Anti-Glare: All three monitors take a very different stance on Anti-Glare, the Cinema Display is full on glare (glass front), the Dell has so much anti-glare that whites were sparkly/grainy (this doesn't bother some but drove me nuts), and the NEC is right in the middle - it has enough anti-glare that you don't see your reflection but not so much that you can even tell it's there. Most would describe it as "semi-gloss".

Color: The color on all three is about equal with the Cinema Display doing a slightly better job with gradients/transitions. With very gradual gradients, the Dell and NEC 6-bit panels become obvious, needing a contrast adjustment to prevent a harshness at the edge of the gradient while the Cinema Display has no problem. The Cinema Display also does not exhibit any IPS glow (that I could detect) while the Dell and NEC have about equal IPS glow. Lastly, the backlight is extremely even on both the Dell and NEC while the Apple had some unevenness. Overall, points go to the Cinema Display for color representation but you definitely are paying for it too as it's in a different price category altogether and is only available on the used market at this point. I use my monitor mostly for business-type use (web/spreadsheets/text/etc.) and only dabble in photography so I don't really require the higher grade IPS panel and would rather have the cash.

Text: Text representation was good on all three with the Cinema Display handling it slightly better with higher contrast. However, setting the NEC to 49% contrast and the Dell to 51% contrast makes text very legible. Unfortunately, higher than these settings and you start to see artifacts around the text (especially bolded text). Again, points go to the Cinema Display for achieving better contrast and still providing good text representation but I've found 49% contrast on the NEC to be more than adequate and natural.

Price: The Dell is the cheapest of the three with the NEC being slightly more and the Cinema Display in another price category altogether. I don't feel as though the Cinema Display has that much more to offer at about one and a half times the price on the used market. But, again, I only dabble in photography so supreme color accuracy isn't at the top of my list.

Overall, the NEC EA244WMI is exactly what I was looking for - a Dell U2412M without the grainy/aggressive Anti-Glare coating and an HDMI port to boot for only a little more money.
