Product Description

Transcending traditional speaker dock forms, and inspired by classic Marantz style cues like polished hardwood and custom finished metal cabinetry, Consolette is more HIFI in-miniature than speaker dock. Offering wireless audio streaming from any mobile device in HiFi quality, the Consolette is both Airplay and DLNA compatible. An on-board internet radio tuner allows for the storage and playback of six internet radio favorites, even without an iDevice docked. Near instantaneous home network connection is established via Net Link, part of a custom Smartphone application written expressly for the Consolette. The Consolette App also features a music player function for streaming directly from the handheld device or from shared folders on the home network. Control of 50,000+ internet radio stations is made possible by a built in tune-in internet radio app launcher. Marantz sound experts employ no less than four, 9-band digital equalizers and hundreds of hours of sound tuning and listening tests to insure that the Consolette reproduces music just as the artist intended, achieving precisely balanced low, mid and high frequencies for premium performance at all volume levels. 150 watts of digital amplification deliver 50 watts per woofer and 25 watts per tweeter in a powerful, bi-amped configuration that's ready to meet any musical demand. Special Balanced Mode Radiator (BMR) drivers are deployed as tweeters. Operating in isolated sub-enclosures, these BMR drivers exhibit wide dispersion at high frequencies and contribute to the imaging capabilities of the Consolette. Additional features include a wide-set retractable dock, high contrast OELD display, and matching remote control.

Marantz MS7000 Consolette Speaker (Black) Review

I have had the Marantz Consolette Speaker for about a month now. There are some very impressive pros and a few cons.

PRO:
Sound. The sound is just incredible. I have several wireless, bluetooth speakers (Jambox and JBL) and my friend has the Bose SoundLink and I listen to it every time I visit and we sit on his deck. This is not anywhere near those products in terms of sound. Owning this has reminded me of the critical importance of speaker quality. Sound is only as good as the speaker. This is a world-class speaker.

Beautiful. If that is important to you, you will not find anything that is more perfect for a modern home. I own a mid-century modern ranch home. I admire and collect the mid-century aesthetic (think Eames and Saarinen, and the like) and this speaker is a PERFECT complement to my home. It draws many comments.

Solid. It is built like a tank and all parts are serious. Wood is impeccably stained. No plastic. Nothing about this seems fragile.

CONS:
The software is not impressive. It is fine. After all, you are looking for a song or a playlist off your iTunes and the software gives you that. But, there are no bells and whistles here. The interface is mostly boring and occasionally annoying. I am downloading updates pretty regularly which tells me that Marantz is working to upgrade this and I expect over time it will be much better.

Connection is old-fashioned. You need an adapter to connect an iPhone 5 to the dock. That is the biggest design flaw, but since I either go wireless or connect via a cable, it is a non-issue for me. But, I could see others being really disappointed by this.

No battery. This is a plug only player. There is no battery in this baby. So, there is nothing "that" portable about the product, not that Marantz ia marketing it as such. I use it on my patio. I just plug it in to my outdoor outlet and enjoy.

Price. I think this unit is overpriced by about $200. I think the price will come down to the $850 range eventually too. But, anyone who is looking for a speaker in this range (me) is privileging quality over a couple of hundred bucks.

NET:
I love it. I was frustrated with the software at first. I wanted something more slick and what I got was a good, old fashioned exceptional speaker with a meh interface. I think a lot of bluetooth wireless speakers are more about the interface than the sound quality and listening to this baby straightened me out. I love the sound, and that is what I focus on. I expect the interface to get better but never be the draw on this device.

N.B.: I was looking for a set of outdoor speakers for my patio. I ended up buying the Consolette instead. I wanted "some" portability (within my home) and I wanted something that would tap into my Apple Airplay. This does just that. I found that outdoor speakers I had before and many that I've listened to in stores lack bass and overall clarity and so I decided to go this route hoping it would fill the space on my patio. Good news, it does. I have not maxed it out yet and may never, as it is pretty damn loud on the high end and provides more than enough sound for an outdoor space of about 400 - 500 square feet. I have used the Consolette throughout my home already and, again, it is a conversation piece at a party. I also like that this will be the kind of purchase that I will pass along to my daughter down the road. Much more romantic than a pair of blah outdoor speakers.

UPDATE: I have included the Consolette as a speaker selection on iTunes (AirPlay). So, when I want to control music selection and volume via Apple Remote on my iPhone it de facto controls the Consolette. Therefore, I am now ignoring the Consolette's app on my iPhone for most of my use of the Consolette (the Consolette has internet radio with presets and I still use the Consolette app to toggle back and forth between the two stations I like.)

The only thing I have to do in this configuration is set the speaker volume on the Consolette manually and then control the range within the Apple Remote. In other words, with the inclusion of the Consolette within AirPlay I now have TONS of options as to how I want to manage this baby! I'm sure some of you already knew this or assumed this, but for me this makes the purchase of the Consolette a slam dunk. I like the idea of controlling the Consolette via my iPhone and now it doesn't metter if Marantz ever upgrades the Consolette app again (they will, but it doesn't really matter now), because I have Apple Remote to override any of it's limits! Now this is perfect.
