Product Description
Asus NVIDIA GeForce GTX 690 4GB GDDR5 3DVI/Mini DisplayPort PCI-Express Video CardASUS GeForce GTX690 4096MB GDDR5 512bit, Dual GPU, 2xDVI-I,DVI-D,mDisplayPort, Quad SLI Ready Graphics Card Graphics Cards GTX690-4GD5 Review
After having a terrible time trying to get my two ASUS GTX 670 Top's to work in SLI and ultimately failing miserably (due to driver/DirectX errors), I decided to bite the bullet and invest in the ASUS GTX 690 - the fastest GPU in the world at this present time. The packaging and presentation of this card is top quality using premium materials and one of the reasons I'm a returning customer of ASUS components. Everything is securely packed within the box including the software/driver disc and power-splitter. There is also a Display Port adapter included.
The card itself is a beauty: a brushed metal casing - not an ounce of plastic in sight. In the centre is an 80mm fan sandwiched between two vapour chambers.
Installation, as ever, is done with ease. Just find your PCIe slot on your motherboard. Slide the card in. Secure it to your case with a couple of screws. Attach two 6+2 pin power cables from your power supply, boot your system, update your nVidia display drivers via the nVidia website, go to your nVidia Control Panel and activate the 'Dual GPU' option and your good to go. When you power up your system, the 'GEFORCE GTX' on the side of the card lights up green."WOW!"
*Benchmark results using FRAPS*
Battlefield 3, Ultra detail, 1080p, Operation Swordbreaker, first contact:
Frames: 6954 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 115.900 - Min: 95 - Max: 153
Crysis, Highest detail, 1080p, 4 x AA, DX10, GPU Benchmarking Tool:
Frames: 5007 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 83.450 - Min: 57 - Max: 112
Crysis 2, Ultra detail, 1080p, HD Texture Pack, DX11, first contact:
Frames: 5288 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 88.133 - Min: 66 - Max: 133
Unlike previous generations of dual GPU cards, the GTX 690 has equivilant performance to two GTX 680's in SLI. The reason nVidia has been able to achieve this is due to lower power consumption and improved heat dissipation with the GTX 6 series cards.
Overall I cannot fault this card. Hugely powerfull, a beauty to look at and so simple to install.
I suppose the only downfall is the price but if you are thinking of running either the GTX 680 or GTX 670 in SLI configuration I'd seriously consider scrapping that idea and going for a single GTX 690.
***UPDATE***
Just received my Nvidia 3D Vision 2 kit today and thought I'd benchmark BF3 again whilst playing in 3D - heres the results:
Battlefield 3, Ultra detail, 1080p, 3D, Operation Swordbreaker, first contact:
Frames: 3765 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 62.750 - Min: 45 - Max: 99
As you can see performance does take a massive hit but the GPU still manages to maintain over 60fps on average. This card certainly isn't overkill at 1080p when running in 3D.
