This is a cool looking box. Beautifully packaged, neat-o torpedo quick-start guide, even comes in a snazzy grey/black cloth bag in case you want to take it out for drinks.Nightmare to get running, though.
The 5Big is a Linux-based RAID array running NAS. Easy enough. You can build one up in a long tedious day or buy this one ready-to-go saving both time and money. Good deal, but:
Not so easy to do!
My 5Big NAS Pro responds to Pings, but wouldn't connect via HTTP after following the instructions, after following the IP-based alternate approach on the Website, after a 40 minute call to tech support where we gutted my network down to a router and two cables disabled the firewall and tried three other computers, and even after an hour and a half of downloading new firmware and starting from scratch. Three hours invested, four computers tried, and a 10 minute install job yawns out into the late evening.
I was going to send it back tomorrow, but no WAY I'm gonna get beaten up by a Linux can with a Web interface! Two hours of hacking later, I managed to get a boot image that would run, and got off the sidelines and back onto the reservation again! THIS was a real contest.
I'm an electronic engineer and I build this sort of stuff 8-5 every day. I bought this thing to back up the Altium designs and SolidWorks drawings of our electronic products. I mention just so you don't think it's a noob install problem. If I can't make it work, and LaCie tech support can't make it work, she's stone dead on the carpet, you know?
It arrived as a BRICK with a blue LED, and took some serious work to get it online. I think maybe I got one with no firmware?
Tech support was clueless and said things that after 30 years of TCP/IP I knew were dead wrong, the printed instructions were incorrect, and the firmware still wouldn't connect. He suggested I box it up and send it back! Oh, and tech support is a 24-hour response email system unless you call the company (no 800 number!) and politely ask for someone. Wow. Not exactly Apple support. If the thing came up and worked as the instructions indicated, I'd love it. Four hours of brutal pwnage to get it working? Just not feeling it.
Hope you have better luck.
UPDATE: Having run the machine for several months now I can say it IS a good piece of gear. Tech Support has gotten better (someone DID something!) and overall I'd recommend it if the out of the box experience was better. One thing I'll say for LaCie, I complained LOUDLY about service and the did something about it. It's how you finish, not how you start, and these guys are serious about finishing well.
