These earplugs are designed to restore sound that is blocked when the ear canal is sealed. They allow you to hear naturally, as though there were nothing in the ears, and prevent ear damage from loud impulse noise using a new adaptation of the original high-fidelity K-AMP integrated circuit. GSP-15 earplugs are for gun sport enthusiasts who need protection from firearm blasts, but also need protection from loud continuous noise from vehicles, machinery, or repeated gunfire from nearby shooters. The Etymotic GSP.15s are very high end electronic earplugs for shooters. Most folks wear a combination of foam plugs and ear muffs that go for about 10% of the cost of GSP.15s. However, while that combination provides effective double protection against gun fire, it also blocks out all conversation and the sounds of movement around the shooter. They are also so big and clumsy, they're called 'Mickey Mouse ears.'

The GSP.15s severly dampen all gun fire noise above 25 decibels while permitting conversation and all other sounds below 15 decibels to be clearly heard. They also have a setting that amplifies sound below 15 decibels. They fit in the ear and weigh next to nothing--about the same as hearing aids (Which Etymotic also makes). The advantages of wearing GSP.15s in the range environment are that they provide adequate protection without isolation, you can hear the workings of your firearm, hear activity in the room, hear or give instructions and hear the range safety officer. Their advantage in the field for professionals, competitive shooters and hunters, and in the home protection environment is too obvious to describe here.

A critical requirement: You must have a perfect seal of the ear canal for these things to work. If not, you will not be able to stay on the range. A good selection of ear tips are provided. Custom fitted ear tips are available for another hundred dollars if you have weird ear canals, like me. Poor seal, poor results.

If you get paid to work in hostile settings or if you just shoot a lot, the GSP.15s are very nice to wear and maybe worth the cost.

Final view: Having said all of the above and after four visits to the indoor range with the GSPs and custom fitted ear tips, I am forced to conclude that--indoors--one must still have ear muffs at the ready in the event that some fellow shows up in the next stall with Dirty Harry's .44 magnum S&W revolver or other big bore loud report firearm.
