XFX FXTRISTANDX Triple Display Monitor Stand Review

I was looking for a sturdy monitor stand since I was purchasing three Dell U2412M monitors. After reading the reviews here, I had some reservations about materials and build quality. Please allow me to lay those rumors to rest.

Pros:
1. This is the only monitor stand I found to hold 24" monitors. I looked at the Ergotrons and their site says they don't support three 24" monitors so I passed on them. If you're going with smaller monitors, they are cheaper options available to you.

2. This thing is a monster in size and weight. With my triple landscape layout, it has a 5 foot span. I had the forethought to weigh just the base alone before assembly and it came in at 11 pounds and it tends to be on the light side by a few pounds (I never calibrated it).

3. Solid construction. ALL load bearing parts are metal - either steel or aluminum. Anybody who states differently does not own this stand. Regarding the plastics - cable guides are plastic and clip on to the post or arms. The base has a plastic cover over metal. Remember, I stated the base alone weighs at least 11 pounds.

4. Plenty of adjustments to get your monitors aligned and angled correctly. Just remember that the center monitor gets the mount WITHOUT the turn screw adjustment. Height adjustment is based off the center monitor and done by the main mounting on the bar.

CONS:
1: Set Up - While overall setup was easy, I did have to customize a bit. The main bar gets inserted into a socket which has a bolt welded to the base. The idea is to insert the rod, screw it onto the bolt and then lock it in with an allen set screw. The problem was with the powder coating and the clearance of the socket, it was TIGHT. My solution was to sand off the powder coat up to three inches from the end, apply a coat of black primer to the fresh metal and oil the tube socket and rod. Problem solved but required an extra half hour or of assembly time.

2. Monitor mounts (rotation) - I had to remove these and snug up the lock nut for monitor rotation. The factory preset was too loose and allowed for very easy monitor rotation but was giving me fits during monitor alignment.

3. Monitor mounts (arm attachment) - Two issues here. First is the attachment design. It allows for quick and easy mounting and removal of monitors, but there is no way to lock them into place which also leads to my second issue with this design. Tilting up is a guessing game. Do not try to make fine adjustments by tilting up, there's no bottom grip or set screw lock to prevent movement so you have a lot of slop. If you go to far down, tilt up beyond flush and make fine adjustments by tilting down. Once set, lock the tilt adjustment securely into place.

4. Aesthetics - I like the stealth fighter design philosophy, but the undercut of the base covering makes the ends appear to curl upwards. I've verified that it is indeed sitting flush as can be and is very stable. But my eyes keep glancing over the ends and wondering.

Summation:
Be prepared for some extra labor when fitting the rod into the base and work in an open area. Be aware of which mount goes on the center monitor and address any loose fittings prior to re-locating the entire setup to your desk. Overall I spent about two hours on assembly and adjustments. Part of this was due to some of my own goofs and gaffs, but also some necessary customizing. Your mileage may vary.

Final thoughts - overall I'm very pleased with this stand. Half a star goes toward having to customize the fit and half a star for the bracket nuances with aesthetics being a push.
