Wilson Electronics 841263 Db Pro Amp Kit 62 Db Review

Okay, I admit it. I was highly skeptical about buying one of these products, mainly because my father had purchased another brand that performed badly in his home. But due to increased frustration and anger over having practically no cell service inside my metal roofed home, I finally relented to try what I had researched to be the best of the cellular amplifiers for my home. Namely, the Db Pro Amp Kit, 62 Db, Model 841263 by Wilson Electronics.

I could have spent more money for a higher end model from Wilson that would have done nothing to help my problem because the 841263 model cell amplifier was ideal for my square footage (about 2000 sq/ft). This model will service almost 4000 square feet. (I saved several hundred dollars going with this model vs. the next higher model that would have been better suited for an office building!) Oh, I know this because I called Wilson Electronics Customer service and spoke with a technician who was most helpful in discussing which model amplifier was best suitable for my home. I highly recommend anyone planning to purchase one of these units to do so before you buy. This will keep you from buying something that won't work out for you causing frustration and unnecessary disappointment. Some units are for different cellular systems and not all work with every system. Nextel requires a special unit for example. The Wilson representative can tell you exactly what you need.

And, everything you need comes in the box. And it is very well packed, believe me. No chance for damage during shipping unless something really stupid occurs.

Installation was very easy. I ran the included coaxial cable across the attic and out through a vent screen to my antenna tower located at the end of my house. I mounted the directional antenna about 18' higher than the roof, pointing toward a cell tower, the location I knew of already to be the closest to my home. This antenna, BTW, is a sealed directional type encased in white nylon/plastic housing. It's very unobtrusive; actually attractive if you are into such stuff.

Next I drilled one hole down through the ceiling from the attic into my centrally located den and attached it to the amplifier that I hid up high on top of a book shelve. There was also room to hide the inside antenna panel up there too.

Down below on my computer desk I ran an extension cord from my UPS power supply to provide the best electrical protection possible, with some power standby time to boot.
Setup was a breeze. When you first plug in the Wilson amplifier, it goes into test mode. There are a couple of lights on the front of this main unit (MU). One is for the band the cell phone talks on and the other band is for data. Wilson builds in protection to keep these units for overloading a cell tower if you are too close to one of them. If the lights on the MU are green, you are good to go. If they change to another color, you just use a small screw driver to adjust the power control until the light changes back to green. In my case it required backing off the one for talking on the cell phone just a tiny fraction; then it was green lights and ready to use.

Now for the big moment! I picked up my iPhone that my wife had bought me a few weeks earlier and looked at the signal strength indicator. Normally in my metal roofed home it would either be "No Service" or maybe just one bar. So, you will understand my surprise to see...tada!!!....FIVE Bars!!!! No...This can't be right, I thought. I walked into another room...still five bars. When I moved to the end of the house, it dropped to four bars.
This thing is bodacious. I would have never dreamed that I could have such service inside my house. In fact, I get better service in the house than I do out in my yard. The Sears Repair man even noticed it the next time he came to service my dishwasher. Before, he couldn't call from my kitchen to speak with the appliance information center. He was surprised to see nearly max signal strength on his phone. He thought that AT&T installed a new tower next to my house.

I write this several months after installation and all is still fabulous inside with excellent cell service now, thanks to Wilson Electronics.
Take my word for this and buy in confidence. You won't regret it.
