As of 06/2012, the Quadro 6000 is NVIDIA's highest-end workstation GPU. For applications that need the advanced features over the equivalent Geforce GPUs, there is nothing else better on the market (except the Quadro 7000 Plex, but that one is in a price range of its own).The following is a somewhat complete list of advanced features compared to the Geforce 480 GTX. Some of them involve actual hardware differences, while others seem to be artificial limitations that NVIDIA uses for market differentiation.
* A lot of memory (6GB) + ECC support
* 64x supersampled antialiasing, 128x with Quadro SLI
* Display synchronization across GPUs and across computers with the optional GSync card
* Support for SDI video interface, for broadcasting applications
* GPU affinity so that multiple GPUs can be accessed individually in OpenGL
* No artificial limits on rendering performance with very large meshes or computation with double precision
* Support for quad-buffered stereo in OpenGL
* Accelerated read-back with OpenGL. There are also dual copy engines so that 2 memory copy operations can run at the same time as rendering/computation. However, this is tricky to use.
* Accelerated memory copies between GPUs (tricky to implement)
* Very robust Mosaic mode where all the monitors connected to the computer are abstracted as a single large desktop. Unlike AMD's Eyefinity, Mosaic works even across multiple GPUs.
Cons:
* The performance for applications that don't use Quadro features can be lower than the equivalent Geforce. For example, raytracing with NVIDIA OptiX is significantly slower than with the Geforce GTX 480, as long as the scene fits completely in GPU memory.
* Quadro SLI only works on a couple of certified workstations from Dell, HP and Lenovo. It will not work with any consumer motherboard, even if it uses the same chipset. Conversely, those workstations do not support Geforce SLI.
* The Quadros are limited to only 2 displays each. GPUs like the AMD FirePro V9800 are much more economical for driving a large number of displays.
* The price is very high. For purely computing applications, Fermi Tesla GPUs offer better performance at up to half the price. If you don't care about points 1., 6. and 9. above, the Geforce is just as good for computing.
* Works fine with many games (e.g. Skyrim), but the performance is lower due to the slower memory and disabled driver optimizations. Also, gaming profiles are difficult to install and I haven't been able to use SLI or driver-based Ambient Occlusions.
