Lorex LZC7091B Vantage Super Resolution 10x Pan-Tilt-Zoom Speed-Dome Camera (White) Review

After spending a year reviewing, comparing and nit picking the various PTZ cameras on the market to upgrade my current system to, I landed on the Lorex 9 camera system which included the camera of this review. I have had it installed now for a week and so far, it has exceeded my expectations. Even in total darkness with very little or no ambient light or starlight, this camera captures an image that is viewable. Yes it will be dark and no it wont look like an image taken during normal daylight, but without IR lighting, it surprised me. I ran the camera to a separate dwelling excessing 200 lft. So power had to be supplied within the 95 ft. range of the supplied cables. (Lorex mentions this in their manual) I ran the RG59 to my residence and used the power leads of the coax as the RS485 leads that are needed to operate the PTZ functions.

The camera operates flawlessly. You can set up the cruise by adding the waypoints and saving them. But be advised, you cannot use motion recording during cruise mode. The sensors are in the DVR not in the camera, therefor any motion, even the camera motion during cruise, will be considered motion sufficient to activate recording. So you end up recording just motion from the camera or false positives.

As for quality, the zoom feature works great. A vehicle at 100 yards for example, I can zoom in and read the license plate number clearly. The only thing I don't like about this camera is the dome itself. Apparently the manufacturing process includes a 2 piece lens that is combined and the seam is polished. Insufficiently at best. Anything the camera sees is somewhat blurry and the autofocus tries to compensate continuously. (Lorex mentions this in their manual too)

Conclusion:
This Pan tilt zoom camera performs very well with excellent image quality. It is controllable by your smart phone (iphone/android) with a little setup savy, and FOR THE MONEY, performs as well as PTZ cams costing considerably more. You can spend 6000.00 on todays market for auto tracking and 36x zoom just for the camera alone. I bought my complete system for 1200.00 including the PTZ.

You will be pleased with this camera, but since all installations are different, be sure to read the specific manual for the equipment your considering. The videos sell the product only and to prevent disappointment and frustrations, be sure to read the manuals.

Bose A20 Aviation Headset (Aircraft-powered w/Bluetooth, Electret mic, Straight cord, 6-pin plug) Review

I needed a TSO headset for Part 121 flying. I tried the Sennheisers, the Telex, Lightspeed Zulu, and the Clarity Aloft noise canceling headsets over an extended period of time. My Clarity Aloft headsets finally failed after 5 years and it was time for something better. I decided to go BIG because I spend a lot of time flying the friendly skies and I wanted something comfortable and functional. Of all of the headsets, the Zulu's were close to the Bose but the Bose A20's win based on comfort and imperceptible weight. Sennheiser was a distant third, then Clarity Aloft (YUK), and finally the Telex's are not in this class of headset.

I was amazed at the noise canceling and comfort of the BOSE A20's. The earcups are soft, there is no clamping of your head, I can wear them coast to coast, and the stereo quality of the AUX inputs is excellent. ATC calls and transmissions are clear as a bell. My only issue is that the noise canceling is so good that there is a tendency to p#ss off the guy your flying with if you have both earcups on and he wants to talk. It can be annoying to start every communication with "huh? what did you say?" I've learned over the years with noise canceling headphones to put the earcup facing the other pilot slightly off center of my ear so that I can hear him on the first pass. If he really wants to talk, I just take the earcup further off of the ear.

I am kind of an audio freak and think I would rate the stereo audio quality as excellent, not crystal clear like Etymotic ER4P headset clear, but pretty close, definitely excellent. I didn't go with the Bluetooth version because it didn't inject audio, only phone.

Overall, the Bose A20's are worth the money, glad I have them!! I think I'll have to be really careful they don't walk away.

UPDATE 2/14/2011
Unfortunately, I have decided to return these headsets in the 30 day trial period. After the first week, these headsets started to "hotspot" the top center of my head and became uncomfortable after several straight hours of continuous flying. The sound quality was excellent but it came down to a comfort issue. There were a few annoying things.
1) If you set the headsets to STEREO, for AUX input stereo, then ATC only comes in on the left ear.
2) The brainbox is kind of heavy and pulls down on your head alot when you turn your head.
3) the "hotspot" issue.

I'd recommend these headsets for single/multi engine piston pilots and instructors more than for part 121.

**** UPDATE, News Flash..... I found Nirvana!!! After trying every noise cancelling aviation headset in the book, I found a part 121 TSO headset that blows everything else completely away, the Bose QC15/Uflymike, just google Uflymike. The lightweight comfort of the QC15's, the noise cancellation is excellent for a semi-quiet Boeing aircraft, the microphone interfaces perfectly with the aircraft, also, there is a stereo input, there are no hotspots on long flights, and it's TSO'd!! and it's $400 - $500 cheaper :)

Sony HVL-F43AM Sony Alpha System HVL-F43AM Flash Unit for Alpha DSLR Review

First of all, this is my first external flash purchase, though I had been looking at the previous generation F42 flash and the flagship F58 for my Sony A55. I was holding out for this unit's release before I got a flash. The F58 is highly-regarded, though it is a chunky and heavy unit- something I wasn't looking forward to for my relatively small camera. The F42 seemed like the right size, though it was missing the "Quick Shift Bounce" system that the F58, and now this new F43 flash has. That basically allows you to operate the camera in vertical mode while still having the flash bounce off the ceiling. I thought it was just a Sony gimmick, but it's something that really works well. From what I've read, Canon and Nikon have no similar flash feature. For as much as Sony cameras get wrongly bashed by fans of the other brands, the same people will envy this flash.

It also comes with a built-in wide angle screen (sort of diffuser), apparently for super wide lenses, and a bounce sheet. I have not had the chance to use a 3rd-party diffuser on this flash yet since I can't be sure what product works with it right now. For wireless shooting, it comes with a foldable mini-stand, which also serves as the tripod mount. It also came with a good quality protective case for the flash unit with the alpha logo (though I don't use it because I stow the flash in a Crumpler bag).

Because of all the new tech that the A55 camera has, I was expecting this flash to be some clunky and dated photography tool by comparison. Instead I'm amazed at how this flash operates and how it integrates with the camera. It manages to take crisp and properly-exposed photos at the right white balance with minimal tweaking.

Setting up wireless flash was surprisingly easy. After it's set up, the camera knows when the flash is mounted and when detached, it's automatically set to wireless mode. It will operate the external flash when the built-in pop-up flash is used (which serves as the wireless trigger through infrared signals)- in a few conditions, there can be some pre-flash artifact from the camera's pop-up flash that shows in the final image, but a certain Gary Friedman says you can use an exposed film strip to block the visible light. Wireless flash use is lots of fun.

It supports high-speed sync (HSS) flash, which from what I've read allows you to use very wide apertures and fast shutter speeds to get a nice depth-of-field effect with flash! When shot this way and when bounced, it doesn't look like harsh flash lighting was used at all. The flash also has many more advanced features (ex. wireless ratio control, manual mode), but I'm not familiar enough with using them.

When it's on the hotshoe of the camera, it's very capable of firing fast- my A55 is usually set to continuous shooting at 6fps, and the flash doesn't seem to slow down the camera at all! I didn't even know it was capable of this even after playing with the unit for some time until a friend took pictures of me in burst mode and I saw the flash going off very fast like it had an electrical problem! I reviewed all the pictures taken and all of them were also properly exposed and sharp. From what I've experienced, it's not capable of this rapid shooting in wireless mode, probably because of the slower flash rate of the built-in camera flash. For those not familiar with external flashes, this one also has an infrared illuminator that allows fast autofocusing in pitch black when the flash is mounted. I even tried this with the not-for-low-light Sony 18-250mm zoom lens and got very good focus and a very good picture with the flash.

My only complaint really is that it still uses AA batteries. OK, this is completely my opinion as I'm sure professionals may want the option to get replacement batteries in the field, but Sony being the proprietary company that they are, they should have seized the chance for the good of humanity to use their InfoLithium battery packs in this thing (the F43 seemed to be made for their compact SLT line anyway!) to get it even smaller and lighter. I would have gladly bought more of those and be able to put it into my camera or the flash when they ran low. That would make for a very compact set-up! Alright I'm just being silly. I bought rechargeable NIMH AA's (Sony Cycle Energy) for these and like it very much (great, fast charger). I'm sure Eneloop batteries would work great too.

In short, if you have a Sony camera and don't need the extra flash output of the F58, and are looking for a flash, definitely get this.

Yamaha RX-A830 7.2-Channel Network AVENTAGE Home Theater Receiver Review

I picked this up as an upgrade to my Yamaha RX-V667 7.2-Channel Home Theater Receiver, a fabulous receiver in its own right, but one that wasn't coming up short on expansion.

Enter the Aventage series.

When you cut through Yamaha's marketing-speak ("Oh boy, it has a fifth standoff in the middle!"), you're still left with a pile of higher-end guts, and the sound reproduction is, in a word: phenomenal. I normally run Yamaha Natural Sound series tower speakers, but I was so floored by the audio quality, I hooked up my JBL 5.1-Channel theater-in-a-box system, and it seemed to bring them to life.

Packed to the gills with inputs and upconversion, I've thrown everything from an original Nintendo Entertainment System to a Blu-Ray player, with a VCR and upscaling DVD player, and more in between. Everything switches over flawlessly, and looks as crisp as possible over a single HDMI connection to my TV. And since the RX-A830 speaks bidirectional HDMI, I can push audio from the smart TV apps to the receiver. The integration is outstanding, and it only gets better...

As an Aventage-series receiver, you can also throw USB devices, DLNA, and AirPlay at this monster, without any of Yamaha's usual $100 buy-ups. One downside, though, is the interface for these functions (as well as Pandora) look like they were written as DOS shell knockoffs circa 1993. I was really expecting more there.

Another "Well, hmm..." is Yamaha's automated calibration. I thought by now they would have improved it, but it still guesses at speaker distances, and gets some of them comically wrong. There's a LOT of tweaking involved to make this sound good in your room. The flexibility is great, the menus for adjusting these settings are well-designed and intuitive, but don't believe for a moment that you're going to set the little microphone puck down and come back to a properly-balanced system in ten minutes.

Once you've set your levels, you get to delve in to different sound fields. Most of the included ones are kind of... gimmicky. I wondered if they'd be higher-end on the Avantage than the lower-end of the range, but they're just as corny. The Dolby and DTS decoders, though, seem to be a revelation over my 667, though. Outside of a theater, I'm not sure I've heard Dolby Digital produced this well.

This being my fourth Yamaha receiver, negative-sounding nuances are... well... Yamaha nuances to me. They won me over from Harman/Kardon on sound quality a decade ago, and it just keeps getting better. Sure, the price is steep, but with 4K baked in, you're getting build quality that I'm going to call "unsurpassed", and futureproofing for quite a while.
