I picked this up as an upgrade to my Yamaha RX-V667 7.2-Channel Home Theater Receiver, a fabulous receiver in its own right, but one that wasn't coming up short on expansion.

Enter the Aventage series.

When you cut through Yamaha's marketing-speak ("Oh boy, it has a fifth standoff in the middle!"), you're still left with a pile of higher-end guts, and the sound reproduction is, in a word: phenomenal. I normally run Yamaha Natural Sound series tower speakers, but I was so floored by the audio quality, I hooked up my JBL 5.1-Channel theater-in-a-box system, and it seemed to bring them to life.

Packed to the gills with inputs and upconversion, I've thrown everything from an original Nintendo Entertainment System to a Blu-Ray player, with a VCR and upscaling DVD player, and more in between. Everything switches over flawlessly, and looks as crisp as possible over a single HDMI connection to my TV. And since the RX-A830 speaks bidirectional HDMI, I can push audio from the smart TV apps to the receiver. The integration is outstanding, and it only gets better...

As an Aventage-series receiver, you can also throw USB devices, DLNA, and AirPlay at this monster, without any of Yamaha's usual $100 buy-ups. One downside, though, is the interface for these functions (as well as Pandora) look like they were written as DOS shell knockoffs circa 1993. I was really expecting more there.

Another "Well, hmm..." is Yamaha's automated calibration. I thought by now they would have improved it, but it still guesses at speaker distances, and gets some of them comically wrong. There's a LOT of tweaking involved to make this sound good in your room. The flexibility is great, the menus for adjusting these settings are well-designed and intuitive, but don't believe for a moment that you're going to set the little microphone puck down and come back to a properly-balanced system in ten minutes.

Once you've set your levels, you get to delve in to different sound fields. Most of the included ones are kind of... gimmicky. I wondered if they'd be higher-end on the Avantage than the lower-end of the range, but they're just as corny. The Dolby and DTS decoders, though, seem to be a revelation over my 667, though. Outside of a theater, I'm not sure I've heard Dolby Digital produced this well.

This being my fourth Yamaha receiver, negative-sounding nuances are... well... Yamaha nuances to me. They won me over from Harman/Kardon on sound quality a decade ago, and it just keeps getting better. Sure, the price is steep, but with 4K baked in, you're getting build quality that I'm going to call "unsurpassed", and futureproofing for quite a while.
