Lite On Plextor PX-512M5Pro Xtreme Series 2.5-Inch 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive Review

Was not hard to install, did a lot of research and this is the SSD I chose, couldn't be happier. I have a EVGA 680i SLI mobo, I re-installed win7 to the ssd and it's running amazing! And yes, I know the SSD isn't running to it's full potential since I don't have SATA3, but it's still better than a regular hard drive. Here are my optimization notes -

*Unhook all hard drives except the one you are installing windows to, after installed, feel free to re-connect all your hard drives.
*Hook SSD into first SATA port on your mobo.
*Update firmware on your SSD BEFORE you install windows on it.
*Update mobo drivers
*Make sure auto-defrag is off for SSD and on for HDD's.
*Change Power Options to High Performance in Control Panel. Go into advance setting - Turn off hard disk - Never.

1) Change nvidia storage controllers to stock microsoft controllers:
-Head to Device Manager (Open Start menu, type Device Manager), and click "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers", and you will see 3 Nvidia Serial ATA Controllers. Right click one of them and click "Properties" and go to the "Driver" tab. Click "Update Driver". Click "Browse my Computer", and then "Let me pick". You will see the option to choose "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller". Click this and click "Next" and let it install.
Do the same for the other two Nvidia Controllers in Device Manager and restart your system. After the controllers have installed, you will be asked to reboot again.

2) Turn off drive indexing:
-Indexing creates and maintains a database of file attributes to use for search so results show up quicker. This can lead to multiple small writes when creating/deleting/modifying files. Searching for files will still work for programs and system tools and such when disabled. Since SSDs have such fast seek times and 4k reads that this feature is pointless.
Open the Start Menu
Click Computer
Right click C: drive > properties and uncheck drive indexing
Click apply (ignore all when comes up)
Once done press the start button and type "Indexing options" into the search and enter, a window will pop up and you can adjust Indexing for quick search exactly how you like.
Move index file to regular HDD.. Control Panel - indexing options - advanced - index location.

3) Turn off hibernation:
-Hibernation was a very useful program for hard drives as it enabled one to resume their work in a very quick time. It is less useful with SSDs as they can load completely in as quick as 10-20 seconds which, in some cases, equals Hibernation. Disabling Hibernation will return 2.5Gb of valuable ssd storage space to the user.
1. Using the start menu search box type “cmd”;
2. Right click the cmd program and select Run as Administrator; and
3. In the command line type “powercfg -h off”.
This will take about 30 seconds it has finished once the command prompt reappears.

4) Enable faster boot thru MSConfig:
-This technique will remove the splash scree at start which will cut your boot time by 2-3 seconds. It is advised that the user not experiment with other options not described as it can have a negative effect on the OS.
1. Press Winkey + ‘R’ and type MSConfig;
2. Check the radio option for ‘No GUI Boot’
Use the start box type “msconfig221;.
3. Apply.

5) Turn off multi-boot selection:
-This should not be done if the drive is being used to boot multiple operating systems off the same OS drive.
1. Right click My Computer and select Properties;
2. Select Advanced System Settings;
3. Select the Startup and Recovery setting box; and
4. Un-check the Time to Display List of Operating System box.

6) Move user folder locations to Secondary HDD:
-Go to your User folder.
Right click your user folder you want to move (ex. the "My Pictures" folder).
Click "Properties."
Click the "Location" tab.
Change the destination to another location bu clicking "Move..." and selecting the destination (ex. "D:\Pictures").
Note 1: If there are two of the same folder in the User folder after the move (ie. My Documents "A" and My Documents "B") you should delete the empty one located on the C: drive. (May need to go into safe mode to delete it) Do not delete the other User folders, only duplicates that come up after the move within the User folder.
Note 2: If the folder already exists that you are linking it to you may want to merge the folders.

Nice size phone and features for the money...but. Out of the box, the phone has a great feel and size. I spent a week researching a GSM phone with LTE that I am able to use oversees. After looking at the usual phones, (Samsung, HTC, Apple, etc.) I decided on the Sony Xperia SP. The initial setup of the phone went smoothly, however, as soon as I turned on "Wi-fi" to update my Android Apps, that's where my problem started. The phone immediately went into "reboot" mode. It wouldn't stop re-booting, I immediate called the Sony Technical help line. Tech Support walked me through and was able to shut the phone off after about 30 minutes of constant re-boot. He had me do a reset to the phone since he said it was a software glitch. He then emailed me a link to a file that Sony uses on their products in order to update software. I did that. The phone accepted the update and the phone re-booted as normal. I re-inserted my sim card and did the normal "new" phone setups. However as soon as I turned on the wi-fi, the phone did the same thing! I immediately goes into re-boot mode.

I called Sony since I bought this product directly from Sony dot com and they told me to return the phone for a replacement. If you buy this phone, please research the Xperia Model you intend to buy for wi-fi problems on the internet and you'll find this is an issue with these phones. If you decide to buy this phone, make sure you have the option to either 1) return the phone for repair 2) have/buy a warranty and 3) the patience to deal with Customer Service

I bought this computer to do basic things for my business such as looking up specifications online, buying and selling things online, and checking email. This computer has given me every problem under the sun in the less than two months that I have owned it. The wireless card cuts out constantly and the computer just forgets it's there. I then have to go through a whole process for the computer to find the wireless card again so I can use the internet. The graphics processing does not work properly either. It cuts out and does not give me monitor a signal no matter how many times I unplug or restart the monitor. I then am forced to hard restart the computer because I cannot see to restart it the proper way. Now it is throwing out drive errors on the hard drive. It is giving messages saying "Your PC has recovered from a serious error" at least once a day. This is all within the course of two months of owning.

Now I understand that every company makes mistakes, because just like people they are not perfect. It is how they handle these mistakes that is the difference between a good company and a bunch of immoral scam artists. Lenovo's support puts them deep into the latter category. I have spent countless hours on the phone with tech support and all they do is reinstall the same stuff that didn't work in the first place and not fix anything. They refuse to admit that there is an actual systematic problem here and try to passify me with dumb suggestions. They are hoping that if they ignore me long enough that I will go away. This computer and the lack of associated support is an embarrassment to Lenovo's tech support department and to the Lenovo name itself.

Tech support has now "escalated" the problem to its customer relations department. I was promised a call from this, I now think made up, department within five business days but it has been two weeks and no one has called. This pathetic monstrosity of a "computer" has cost myself and my business a significant amount of time during which I could have been doing the actual work I need to get done.

Unfortunately for you LENOVO if you think by ignoring me that I will go away, then you are sadly mistaken. You have not heard the last from me, and if you want to play games then let's go.

P.S. DO NOT BUY THIS COMPUTER!

Asus UX31A-XB73 13.3-Inch Laptop Review

This is probably the first review of this machine on the internet. There is nothing out there. I ended up taking the risk since I really like the spec and cant wait for Haswell.

Pro
- Display: Once you use this screen, anything less than 1080 will bother you. A beautiful display
- Keyboard: Nothing much to say here. Work great. Love the backlit
- Trackpad: Ignore what people say about Asus trackpad. Maybe they fixed it with this version but I find it good. Not the best. I have MAcbook book and I think that is the gold standard. You can customize the gestures and it works well
- Design: Beautiful. Solid Built. Feels durable
- Windows 8: I upgraded to Win 8. No issues. Work great
- Battery: I use it primarily for work. 6 hours is what I am clocking
- Sound: I read about poor sound. Frankly, it's fine

Cons
- Fan: I do hear the fan at times. I am coming from Macbook Air so I am used to practically no noise. Frankly I am probably being picky
- Wifi: Once in a while it will take an extra second or two to connect once it comes off sleep mode. Once connected zero issues

All and all. I chose this over Acer Aspire S7 392 (tested it for a week). Performance wise both were close. Acer has the Battery advantage as it comes with Haswell and has touch. But I could not justify buying a white machine. Asus has a better trackpad. I think I am going to end up loving this machine.

Denon DL 103R Moving Coil Cartridge Review

I decided to buy this cartridge after seeing several positive reviews about it on the internet. I have had a Koetsu for many years and it was simply worn out. I plan to have it rebuilt but my curiosity was piqued with this Denon cartridge. Well, I am not disappointed. I am using this cartridge with an Audio Research Pre-amp made for MC cartridges mounted on an SME tonearm and Sota turntable. I set the cartridge loading impedance at 100 ohms as recommended in the manual and VTF set at 2.6 grams. I have about 10 hours on the cartridge now, so it might still be too early to make a final assessment, but so far I am very pleased. Since I have been using a Koetsu for so many years I am comparing the Denon to that.

The Koetsu is a very fine cartridge and at 5-6 times the cost, one expects proportionally more performance. Such is not the case. First, the Denon tracks much better than the Koetsu ever did. One of my favorite records is a Direct to Disc recording at 45 rpm of Beethoven's Passionata. It is a very dynamic recording and difficult to track. I had given up listening to it years ago because the piano crescendos break up so much. Well, after listening to a few records and noting how clean and clear this cartridge was tracking, I had to try this record again. It plays it perfectly! Plus the detail is all there. I can hear the pedals moving as well as the pianist taking deep breathes just before an energetic run of the keys.

I'm not sure if the Koetsu had just gotten darker sounding over the years, but the Denon sounds so much more lively and clear. Not bright, not dark, but just right. Of course, I could increase the cartridge loading impedance to make it sound even brighter, but it sounds clear and natural to me at 100 ohms. I was up to 47 kohms loading on my Koetsu cartridge.

All in all, I can't imagine spending big bucks on a phono cartridge ever again. I find this one quite satisfying.
