Yiynova DP10U+ 10.1" USB Digitizer Tablet LCD(Win/Mac) Review

I heard a lot of horror stories about this product, but I decided to turn the other cheek and check it out for myself. The package arrived in pristine condition, with everything included. Installation was very easy (and my computer doesn't open programs such as this, so I had to install it manually myself, by actually searching through the disk's folders, and clicking on the drivers.) This was very easy to do, as the folders were organized. The only thing that confused me, was the general setting up of the device (switching the monitors and such), but that's just because I'm clueless. it's actually very easy.XD
In the beginning, I had some trouble with clicking, such as when I would double click, it wouldn't select what I wanted, and had to press the pen's select button. The problem seemed to fix itself, as it stopped.

I fiddled around in Photoshop Elements 10, which took to the program swimmingly. At times, there'd be lag, where it'd take a second or two for the command to catch up with my cursor. This didn't bother me at all, (I mean, it's not like it took more than 5 seconds) I noticed that, the further you're zoomed out, the more jitter you have. I did a sketch, where I was zoomed out at less than 70%, and when I zoomed in, the lines were crazy jagged (not that it mattered, as it was a sketch). Who draws a final copy from that magnification anyway?

I've been using this little tablet in my lap since I got it earlier today, as it's quite comfortable to hold. I like positioning it like a sketchbook, against both my legs. The power cable is long enough for me to do this, but I can see why others may complain about the length, especially if they're working at a desk with a bulky desktop computer.

When holding it at an angle, your image will wash out, or look darker (like a laptop screen) you can see this effect by looking at your laptop's screen at different angles. You know how you position your screen to where you like it? Well, move it, and you'll see the color change. This didn't bother me either, as even if the color changed, I knew what color I picked from my selection tool.

Hmm..I think that's it. I'm generally a really laid-back person, so the cons listed really didn't irk me, I personally believe they are outweighed by the pros.

Maybe I'm just too content with everything. XD

Oh! I did try working in Manga Studio EX 4, which also reacted very well, and shared its pros and cons with what I listed. C:

I should also probably mention that this is my very first tablet (other than Wacom's brand, which don't give you the ability to draw on an actual screen), so that may also make my review a tad biased.

Nevertheless, I recommend this product, especially if you're on a budget (I know you're probably here, because, like me, you can't afford a Cintiq). It truly is a great alternative!

85mm lens for Nikon SLR cameras

Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras Review

A exceptional portrait lens for both digital and film, the Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D is usably sharp wide open and tack sharp by the time you stop down even just a bit. Relatively small and very light, it feels just right in my hand. Steve McCurry is one of my favorite photographers and I was happy to discover that many of his great shots were taken with this lens.

Also, if you shoot on a manual focus body like the F3, you'll like the solid but smooth feel of the focus ring.

The 85mm comes with a metal, screw-on hood. My preference is the plastic bayonet mounts, but I find that I don't need the hood that often since this lens doesn't tend to flare.

Two minor complaints about this lens: first, the bokeh is not exceptional. That's OK; I'm not a bokeh hound. But when I see the creamy out of focus specular highlights that the 85mm f/1.4 produces, sometimes I dream about spending the extra money.

Second, I wish it were AF-S. But even without AF-S, it focuses faster than you'd expect.

Finally, the construction is solid. I've used it heavily for two years in deserts, jungles, and glaciers (ok, and in less glamorous places like around the apartment) and it still looks brand new.

In short, my favorite lens. Absolutely worth every penny.

Product Description

Perfect if you're a business professional looking for a projector in a small or medium-sized meeting room, or seeking the ideal portable projector to take with you while visiting customers, the ASUS B1M LED projector measures a travel-friendly 7 by 5 1/2-inches to fit nicely on tables as well as inside carrying cases while traveling to mobile meetings

ASUS LED Projector (B1M) Review

At first it sounds awesome right? 700 lumen projector that can push 720p (and higher!) Granted, it didn't dissappoint. The picture is excellent, the color is excellent and will easily do 60" and above! Just keep in my 700 lumens is still not that bright and you will have to dim some lights to get the full, rich, deep colors out of this little guy.
I do question the true "Wi-Fi" capability on this projector though. I can quickly connect my tablet wirelessly over my network, but have yet to work through all the passcode and dongle switch codes to get my wi-fi connected desktops and laptops at home to it. I am more than capable at technology like this, but it bothers me that I would have to type in the IP port rather than letting the projector find available computers to connect to. That is why I took 1 start off. Lack of full wi-fi capability, instantly without having to jump through hoops.
For under $700, I really can't complain though. The highest resolution I've been able to get out of it is 1440 x 900. I was really hoping to cross to at least a fake 1080i or something, but it tapped out there. All and all, you most likely won't be disappointed.

Rode NT2A Anniversary Vocal Condenser Microphone Package Review

First thing, this is a very nice mic. 2nd thing, do yourself a favor and get a nice, sturdy mic stand & boom. Even the good "on stage" stuff ain't gonna cut it unless you don't mind slipping & toppling due to the weight of this mic. Particulary if you gonna boom it out any, or use horizontal, and/or inverted positioning. At least go with something like the Atlas MS-20E stand which has a 12 inch die cast 14 pound base coupled with the Atlas PB15 boom which has a 3.5 pound counterweight, and a double boom lock option. Together that'll run ya about 125 bucks void a deal. Don't be an idiot a put this awesome mic on a piece of crap stand. Sooner, or later...you'll be sorry. 3rd thing...a decent pre-amp never hurts.

Enough about stands & stuff...I bought this mic specifically for recording vocals as a solo acoustic guitar player. And it's great for that, especially through a tubed pre-amp. But if you play an acoustic instrument while singing...it will pick-up a lot of the instrument using the card pattern in an upright position. Using the figure 8 pattern with a null area pointing towards the instrument is a big help with this. Enter the sturdy mic stand & boom, lol. The omni pattern is good for adding a little width to your sound when needed, and softening the forward gain just a bit. The omni is also fairly good for say 3 players playing in a tight circle, and the figure 8 for two across from each other. I do think it is a better vocal mic than instrument mic hence the 4 stars instead of 5. But it will do the job nicely assuming you manage it properly, and find a good balance, when using it in that manner. This mic will not let you down unless you're used to mics priced in the thousands.

Marantz PM8004 Integrated Amplifier (Black) Review

For comparison sake, I demoed a NAD 356BEE, Rotel RA-1520, and the PM8004 with a pair of KEF Q300 and B&W685. The NAD appears to be $200 cheaper than the Rotel and Marantz, but it does not include a phono pre-amp stage, which cost an extra $200. So if you add that MDC module, it would cost the same as the Rotel and Marantz, which both of those amp include a phono preamp stage. The MDC slot does give you the flexibility of adding a DAC or phono.

Note: I tested all amps in Pure Direct Mode. My computer fed audio in WAV 44.1KHz into a Cambridge DACMagic (upscales to 192KHz). The DAC was connected via AudioQuest interconnect into the "CD" input. The KEFQ300 were the preferred speakers (B&W685 is my zone2 speaker set). I also used 14 guage Audioquest X2 speaker wires that ran 12feet each - connections between speakers and amp were bi-wired. Speakers were set about 8feet apart, about 3-4 feet from wall and 20-30 degrees toe-in. Speakers were set on 24 inch stands. Speakers probably had about 150 hours on them. Each amp was left on for three days of continuous use for break-in.

On to the comparison. I started out with the Rotel RA-1520. In terms of build quality, the Rotel is top notch and best of the three. The chasis, the knobs in the front, the binding post are all built with exceptional quality. The 60watts rating is very conservative, it felt like it was outputing close to 90-100 watts. The amp provided more power than most bookshelf speakers will ever need. The bass and midrange is top-notch. Bass is tight and controlled, it is probably the best amp for bass and midrange. Imaging and soundstage is exceptional and airy. The treble is a bit bright and edgy, though not harsh - and I'm using more laid-back speakers too. The Rotel is no slouch, but there was something missing from this amp. The sound that emanates from this amp sounded life-less and cold - some people calls it analytical or clinical - which is not for me. So if you like that kind of sound, the Rotel is the best choice. I would not pair this amp with bright speakers.

The NAD 356BEE was next. This unit is very plasticy and I would probably rate it the lowest in build quality when compared to Rotel and Marantz. Regarding power output, this amp sound the most powerful. It has very powerful bass (best out of the three), but it was a bit more splashy and boomier (relative to the other two amps). This amp appears to be built to be driven at very high volumes - so if you want to crank it up, this is the amp for you. Soundstage and imaging was good. The one thing, and most critical to me, was that the amp sounded a bit dull. The treble was missing something to it. It just didn't really click with me.

The PM8004. The sound was airy, warm, smooth, and full of life. The moment I got goosebumps listening to Adele's powerful voice, I knew this was THE amp for me. Norah Jones timbre voice came through with smooth and emotional impact. Frusciante's guitar licks screamed with authority when I popped in Stadium Arcadium. In addition, I felt this amp did the best in creating that center image, but it's only marginally. Some more observations: Power output is comparable to the Rotel. Bass is not as tight as the Rotel, but better than NAD. Imaging is not quite as clear as the Rotel, but a tad bit better (maybe even the same) than the NAD.

In summary, the Rotel amp was like that hot chick that you drool over, but you didn't like her personality once you went out a date with her. I really tried to like the Rotel amp and even gave it a longer audition time. The NAD didn't impress me. The Marantz, although technically not as good as the Rotel, the warmer sound was a better fit for me. Also one thing I almost forgot to mention is that the Marantz does the best job at resolving details at lower volume - which is super important to me.

Build quality: Rotel>Marantz>>NAD
Bass control (tightness and timing): Rotel>Marantz>>NAD
Bass impact (volume): NAD>Rotel>Marantz
Midrange: Rotel>Marantz>NAD
Total power output: NAD>Rotel>Marantz although they are all sufficient for bookshelf speakers.

I can't recommend one over the other, but if you like warmer sound, stick with the PM8004. If you like the clinical sound with tight and accurate bass, the Rotel is the best choice. I'm not sure about the NAD since it didn't really do much for me.
