Fujifilm XF 60mm F2.4 Macro Lens Review

(My last review of this lens discussed a lens that produces solid image quality marred with a slow auto and manual focus, however, the focus issues have been fixed by a firmware update.)

Look and feel: this portrait angle lens is a relatively small low profile that fits well in proportion with the x-pro1 body. The lens hood is quite large and doubles its lens length. Lens and hood (!) is all metal in construction.

Operation: The firmware released late September 2012 improved the function of the lens greatly bringing up the speed of manual and autofocus. Hunting can still occur when contrast focus misses, but those 10 seconds of hunting has been drastically cut down to what feels like ~3 seconds. Manual focus is fast and now quite usable.

Usage of EVF is recommended as opposed to the usage of OVF for purpose of confirming focus on subjects.

Recommended.

Portrait macro shot
Lenses are designed for exclusive use on digital cameras with smaller-size imagers and inherit all of the benefits of our Di products. These lenses are not designed for conventional cameras and digital cameras with image sensors larger than 24mm x 16mm.

Super Performance (SP) for Discriminating Shooters
Tamron SP (Super Performance) series is a line of ultra-high-performance lenses designed and manufactured to the exacting specifications demanded by professionals and others who require the highest possible image quality. In creating SP lenses Tamron s optical designers put their foremost priority on achieving superior performance parameters they are all designed to a higher standard with little regard for cost constraints. As a result, Tamron lenses bearing the SP designation feature impressive and innovative designs that have established an enviable reputation for excellence among those knowledgeable photographers that demand the very best.

Internal Focus (IF)
Internal focusing (IF) provides numerous practical benefits to photographers including a non-rotating front filter ring that facilitates the positioning of polarizing and graduated filters, and more predictable handling because the lens length does not change during focusing. Even more important, Tamron's Internal Focusing (IF) system provides a much closer minimum focusing distance (MFD) throughout its entire focusing range. In addition, IF improves optical performance by minimizing illumination loss at the corners of the image field, and helps to suppress other aberrations that become more troublesome at different focusing positions.

Tamron SP AF60mm F/2 Di II
Low Dispersion (LD) Glass for Greater Lens Sharpness
Low Dispersion (LD)
Low dispersion (LD) glass elements in a lens help reduce chromatic aberration; the tendency of light of different colors to come to different points of focus at the image plane. Chromatic aberration reduces the sharpness of an image, but glass with an extremely lowdispersion index, has less of a tendency to separate (defract) a ray of light into a rainbow of colors. This characteristic allows the lens designer to effectively compensate for chromatic aberration at the center of the field (on axis), a particular problem at long focal lengths (the telephoto end of the zoom range), and for lateral chromatic aberration (towards the edges of the field) that often occurs at short focal lengths (the wide-angle end of the zoom range.)

Aspherical Elements (ASL) Provide the Ultimate in Image Quality and Compactness)
Tamron uses several hybrid aspherical lens elements in many lenses bearing the Aspherical designation. These innovative optics allow us to achieve the ultimate in image quality, and at the same time produce lenses that offer remarkable zoom ranges in extraordinarily compact packages. By perfecting theses cutting-edge advances for series production, Tamron has advanced the state of optical design, and virtually eliminated spherical aberration and image distortion from the high-power-zoom series.Through the effective application of Hybrid Aspherical Technology, one lens elemen tcan take the place of multiple elements without compromising performance. This is what allows us to produce remarkably compact long-range lenses that deliver a uniformly high level of image quality at all focal lengths and apertures.

Tamron AF 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 SP Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras (Model B001E) Review

I'd imagine that many people are shying away from this lens due to some of the reviews. Rockwell's ultra-wide comparison is where I first heard about this lens, and it did not do too favorably there...

I was looking for an ultra-wide lens for Nikon DX format, with easy to correct distortion. I was originally looking for the Tokina 11-16, which has gone up in price considerably several times, and NEVER seems to be available. I was also thinking about the sigma, but the inability to correct the distortion easily wide open didn't make me too happy, and I couldn't find one locally to test. The nikon 10-24 isn't available yet, and the 12-24 is too expensive and not wide enough.

So, I decided to check this lens out at a local photo shop, and I'm glad I did. After a few test shots, I ended up purchasing it. It was sharp enough for my needs - A bit soft wide open, but I never shoot wide angle lenses wide open. F/8 looks near perfect to me on all edges and corners, with some slight color fringing that I REALLY had to look to see. The edges are occasionally soft, but I have only noticed this when I am pixel peeping.

It seems surprisingly well built. Metal mount is always nice, and the focus and zoom both have very good feels to them. It just feels RIGHT in my hands. I haven't drop tested it, and I don't plan to. I could see the AF mechanism going out on a bad drop, but that's just pure speculation.

Another plus - There is MORE than enough room to put whatever UV filter you would like on it with no vignetting. I don't know about filter stacking, but again, I never stack filters.

It does have it's quirks. AF stopped on me once when I was switching back and forth from AF to MF. A remount of the lens solved this, and I haven't had this issue since.

I'm also suspicious about the quality control. It looks like I got a good copy, but I can tell that a few out there have not. Just make sure you have a good return policy.

I'm not sure where you could go wrong with this lens. If you pixel peep and need ultimate sharpness wide open, go with the Tokina - It's a pro lens, and it's price has definitely increased to reflect that. I'm sure that the Nikon 10-24 will be an amazing lens as well - of course, at twice the price. For the non-pixel peepers who just want to make great ultra wide photos, it's hard to go wrong here. It's not optical perfection, but it's a damn good lens.

It all comes down to how you want to use it and what your budget is. Interior shooters, take note - Used in conjuction with a bounce flash, I get super-sharp and relatively distortion free images that look better than any interior shot I have ever taken.

Five stars because I couldn't be happier with this lens for my needs.

EDIT: After a couple of weeks, I've noticed something mentioned in an off-site review in which this lens was described as having a curved focus field - A ')' shape, if you will. After abusing this lens by shooting extremely (And I mean EXTREMELY) close up flat surfaces, I can agree with this. What this means in practice is that test charts and brick walls shot from a foot away may not be as sharp as they could, but real world usage is still great. What this also means is that if you shoot a lot of interiors or other scenes in which you have walls on both sides of you and a center of focus at the rear, the curved field will be very beneficial to the overall sharpness of the image. Just something to be aware of - I'm still happily shooting, it's exactly what I needed.

Toshiba Satellite S875-S7356 17.3-Inch Laptop (Ice Blue Brushed Aluminum) Review

Great screen resolution, and the built in software that makes older DVDs look better actually works. Energy saver cuts in automatically if you leave the screen open and forget about it. The keyboard feels great, it's just like a full size desk top KB. The two button cursor pad reacts quickly and is easy to use with one hand. It is set up as an on line entertainment PC, so if you want to use it for work, about half the software on the computer is completely useless. Windows 8 comes with a start page, which is just an extra step to get where you want to be. It is obviously designed for internet touch screen devices and it's a useless addition for a device without a touch screen, but that's more a comment about W8 than about this computer. It's plug and play with everything I connected to it so far, so no installation CDs required for any of my devices. Logged on to the internet and it immediately registered Windows and was ready to go. Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 is just as bad as all the previous versions, so I replaced it with the latest version of Firefox. A lot of software on there either expires in 30 days or you have to sign up immediately to use, which is pretty much what you get on every computer, unlike the good old days when you got free full versions of things like MS Word, complete with install disk, which I just installed on this computer and it works just fine, so I don't have to pay Microsoft for new versions of the same old software! For work use, the speed and memory are more than sufficient, but I just spent a few hours playing the free Penguins game on it, and it only stalled once, I don't know why - maybe because I touched the pad with two fingers and it was confused. Only had it a week, but no problems yet.

Synology DiskStation DS412+ 4 Bay All In one NAS Server For SMB Users.

Synology DiskStation 4-Bay 12TB (4 x 3TB) Network Attached Storage (NAS) with iSCSI (DS412+ 4300) Review

Ok, so I have an ever aging and ailing Windows Home Server. An original which while still going strong has begun to exhibit signs of time and age. My original WHS served as a storage center for all of the family's photos, docs, music, and movies that I used to stream to another HTPC running XBMC, 3 windows PC's, a few xbox 360s, and of course a smattering of phones and other smart devices. To say the least, the original WHS had its fair share of problems with networking, software integrations, router configurations and general head banging and teeth grinding. None of these were ever really intuitive or straightforward, and all had their fair share of frustration. And all of that was done at a time without kids. Which we all know, suck the living life out of us and vaporize time like an expanding black hole. So my next server would not, repeat NOT, mandate as much time.

Time for a replacement. So where did I start? First I decided that I would value my data over the speed of the machine, as much of it would be used on my home Gigabit network. So speed was not the first priority. Second, I wanted to attempt to ensure some semblance of data protection. After reviewing and reading about all of the RAID types out there I have come to a single understanding. Nothing is guaranteed, and everyone has a different subjective opinion about the actual security of your data across the different RAID types. So in the end, make a backup, of your backup. Third, it had to be accessible by all of my devices in my network and for me especially, be able to be viewed and accessible by my media devices (i.e. Xbox 360, Android phones, tablets, and other Windows computers.) Seems so easy right, three simple requests.

Now on to building. I started by building and testing all of the mainstream free, or low priced alternatives. I built and rebuilt, and rebuilt... a FreeNAS box, an NAS4Free box, an UnRaid box, an Ubuntu server box, a Windows 7 media server box with Raid, a dedicated XBMC with Raid storage, Open Media Vault, Server Elements, and a few others that were quickly burned to disk and then made into my ever expanding coaster set. All not easy to accomplish in the garage late at night. Either way I learned a lot.

1) None of these were any easier than my current server
2) All of them take a tremendous amount of time to install, diagnose, and set up
3) None are really designed as media servers. They can accomplish this, but only when using large amounts of Tylenol.
4) Did I mention Tylenol? Oh and use small disks when creating all of these RAID types.
5) Parity checks are another word for 24 hour breaks

I tested all of these mainly because I don't like to spend money I don't have to, and initially it sounded fun. It wasn't.
Then I spent days if not weeks comparing some of the mainstream commercial choices. These included QNAP, Synology, Buffalo, Iomega, ReadyNAS, Drobo, and others. I scoured the internet in search of reviews, comments, anything I could use to compare and determine which Server I should choose. In the end I finally based my choice on about 30 solid reviews of each device. And in the end I chose the Synology DS412+.

Wow, is all I have to say. After throwing in four 2TB hard drives, setting up the drives in Synology Hybrid Raid, (waiting 24 hours for parity checks, and extended SMART tests) I was finally ready to go. Let me say, night and day from anything else I tested and used. Most everything is intuitive, easy to access, and quick to implement. Windows, and Mac sharing is automatically setup and turned on, Linux would have to be enabled. User creation is fast, descriptive, and access is managed with nice easy to understand check boxes. My windows home computers instantly saw the new shares, and having created a user with the same name and password as my computer, could access the appropriate shares right away. All of the software packages were quickly installed and usable. Overall I love the administrative interface.

Installed and tested the music, file, photo, cloud, Plex media server, download center, synology media server, and surveillance station software. All installed, configured and worked correctly. I then downloaded and used the Android apps for each of these software packages, and confirmed those all work too. Not saying that all of the software packages are robust and great featured, but they do work.

After setting up the Plex media, and synology media server software, I can confirm that these work great!!! Not only does my Xbox see these no problem, but the Plex media server allows my users to connect and stream across the internet. Tested it out and had no problem streaming any of my music, or movies across other wifi, or 4G connections.

Some quirks included accessing the server from outside of the home network. By default the file sharing system is turned on, and users are given access to the appropriate shares, but unless you use the "Application Portal" from the control panel, and enable the ports to which you want to give access, you will not be able to access it from a WAN. This is true for all applications on the server. It only took me about 2 hours to figure that one out. I hope that helps someone.

Overall, I am having a wonderful and fun experience with my new Synology DS412+. I opted for the 412+ instead of the DS413 simply because of the reviews regarding the Plex media server, and so far I am not disappointed. I would absolutely recommend this product to a friend. I would say though. that if you don't need the media capabilites, I would feel confident in getting the less expensive DS413 as it is normally about $150 less. Hope this helps someone in their decision about a new NAS. Feel free to comment or ask questions and I will do my best to answer!!
