G-42 soundbarKlipsch Gallery G-42 Soundbar (1) Review
Have this hooked up to a Harman Kardon AVR 2700, which had stand-alone left and right channels swapped out with this sound bar (which has independent connections for left, right, and center.) Depending on what you're hoping to get out of your system, the results are a little bit mixed.First, my receiver has 100w/channel output, and the previous speakers were rated at 100w RMS; this soundbar is 50w RMS. Usually on my receiver, when listening to music, the volume level at about "58" would be pretty dang loud. (Harmon Kardon has a mode that, instead of listing the dB value, it just goes with a 0-100 volume rating...it's all relative.) With this soundbar, it needs to get up to around 65 to sound as loud. Not a big deal...the amp still has plenty of power to keep going up if I feel the need to crank up the subwoofer and become a seismic noise generator.
As you probably already know about soundbars, including this one, is that they pretty much require a subwoofer to compliment it. I have an Energy 800w 10" sub to round this out, and together they sound quite nice. This Klipsch produces the highs and mids very nicely (better than the stand-alone speakers I had), and with the sub, everything really comes together.
With that said: if I was interested mostly in music, investing in this soundbar wouldn't have made much sense, unless I'm into classical or another genre where the emphasis is on true representation of the highs. For most of my music, my other speakers do a perfectly fine job. Perhaps not as accurate, but nobody ever complained about them.
Where this soundbar really shines is with movies. The dialog is perfectly clear, and has a level of separation that was otherwise never there with only the two speakers. (You could go with a dedicated center channel, but personally...I don't want so many boxes with speakers all over my living room.)
Lastly - I purchased this on sale for half-price (350.) While I'm happy with it for that price, the audio difference between it and my older left/right channel speakers wouldn't have justified the 700 dollar MSRP. Yes, it certainly sounds better. But everyone has their price, and full price would have been above my pay grade...
Overall, I'd recommend this one if you are looking for a soundbar, it will be paired with a subwoofer, and you care about the high/mid clarity of your audio. If you already have a couple speakers you're happy with, make sure you either get a great deal and/or a good return policy, because the different may not be as mind blowing as you're hoping.
