Optoma HD25, HD (1080p), 2000 ANSI Lumens, 3D-Home Theater Projector Review

This is the 3rd projector I've owned in the last 8 years. Started out with an Infocus 4805 back in 2005, which was awesome at the time. After 5 years of owning it, the color wheel shattered and it was time for something new. In 2010 I bought the Optoma HD66 720p 3D ready projector. It was a significant upgrade, and even though it required purchasing the seperate 3DXL box, I've been happy with it, but I recently decided to upgrade again because I was having issues watching any 3D movie with a dark scene. I purchased a new Samsung 3D plasma TV last year for the living room, and got so used to the excellent picture quality,(best I've seen on any TV so far), that my 720p projector wasn't cutting it anymore. The black level and brightness of the HD66 couldn't compare to a new TV either. The entire opening sequence of The Avengers (which takes place mostly in the dark) was almost unwatchable on the projector in 3D. In 2d it wasn't an issue, but I like my 3D and I was neglecting my basement home theater because of it. Everything looks so much better on my plasma. So, it was time to look for something that could compete.

I first purchased the Viewsonic PJD7820HD because of the lower price, higher resolution, and higher lumens thinking that would solve my brightness problem. It did not. As a matter of fact, other than the sharpness, there was no difference in picture quality at all. So I returned it and decided upon this projector after, the Optoma HD25. And it's working out great. I've only had it a few days now, but the picture quality blows away the HD66 in my opinion, and it looks great in 3D. The dark scenes are no longer a problem. It doesn't rival the picture on my 3D TV, but it comes damn close. Plenty bright, and super colorful!

So, if your looking for a projector with a great quality picture, in both 2D and 3D, look no further.

The multifunction LCD readout provides ready access to power/battery condition vitals, such as: Runtime, Load, Temperature, and much more. The unit also features a battery expansion interface for an additional battery pack in order to increase back-up time. It includes eight (8) battery and surge protected NEMA 5-15R output receptacles, including four (4) that are designed to serve as fail-safe options for protecting critical loads. It also comes with four maintenance-free, user-replaceable 12V/9Ah batteries. Bundled PowerPanel Business Edition Management Software monitors UPS status and can provide unattended shutdown of two serially connected servers. The patented GreenPower UPS advanced circuitry reduces UPS energy costs by up to 75% compared to competitive models. An optional SNMP / HTTP Remote Management adapter (RMCARD202) supports remote management and control of the PR1500LCDRTXL2U through a standard web browser. The unit's unique convertible design allows for use in either a Tower (T) or Rackmount (RM) form factor. CyberPower PR1500LCDRTXL2U Smart App Sinewave UPS 1500VA 1125W SNMP/HTTP Rack/Tower Review

The Chinese made (see photo) "CyberPower PR1500LCDRTXL2U Smart App Sinewave Green UPS - 1500VA/1125W AVR LCD SNMP/HTTP XL (Black)" arrived in a solid, well engineered box (see photo). The gross weight of the box is 42 Kg/92.5 lbs (see photo). On the whole, the unit appears attractive and well made as there were no noticeable blemishes and flaws on the finish and surface of the unit. In short, the product projects the appearance of having been assembled in a factory with well define processes and quality control measures.

On the electrical rating of the unit itself, I find the manufactures claim of 1125 watts of net output power a bit disingenuous. According to the affixed manufacturers electrical label, the device is UL rated to draw 12 Amps at 125 VAC or 1500 VA for a net output of 1125 Watts (see photo) with 75% efficiency. That works out to a total of 1440 VA at the wall plug and 1080 watts for a typical 120 VAC house and only 1320 VA and 990 watts for a house running on 110 VAC. Maybe they exist, but I don't know of any house that is operating at 125 VAC. Hence, presuming normal load and source conditions, it would be more forthright to advertise this device with a maximum output rating of 990-1080 Watts at 110-120 VAC.

The CyberPower PR1500, though called a "UPS" by name, is in fact not a true UPS and uninterrupted. This product, by electrical design, is not a double conversion device and therefore has a transfer time up to 6 milli seconds. A true UPS, with double conversion circuitry (AC-DC-AC) has zero transfer time and truly uninterrupted with AC line lost. But, because of noise levels, electrical efficiency issues and popular perception, CyberPower, APC and other manufactures include devices such as this under the heading of UPS.

The set up and configuration instructions are incomplete and uses very small hard to read type. Also no hard copy of the manual is supplied. The only manual available is one that can be down loaded or obtain from the supplied CDROM. Not all of my power backup applications are near a computer(s) and to presume so or to disregard other applications is a bit near sighted. As for tech support, twice this week I called the phone number listed on the company web site during normal working hours (1:30pm CST) and the phone rang for several minutes with no one answering.

Although not mentioned in the instructions, the front LED display block can be removed and rotated (see photo) to accommodate horizontal and vertical placement. To rotate the LED display block, one has to insert a flat tip (standard) screw driver into a small slot (see photo) and gently and carefully lift and extract the display block. The display block is attached in the rear with a ribbon cable to the face panel so be careful not to extend this part too far. Somewhat disappointing, given today's technology and ease to set, but the displayed input voltage is off by +2 VAC as per a Fluke 187 DVM.

The on/off switch has a plastic protective flip cover (see photo) to prevent accidental cycling of the AC source. This is a nice hardware feature and one that I feel other manufactures would do well to adopt. The unit comes with a 10 foot power cord with the AC prongs set in a protective plastic sheath (see photo). Batteries were fully charged on arrival.

As an observation, during the power cycle/transfer test and yet to be quantified, I noticed that the CyberPower PR1500 produces more inverter, cooling fan noise and vibration than the combined effect produced by an APC SU1400RM2U and SU2200RM2U sine wave units I have protecting an audio system. That's because the inverter fan in the CyberPower PR1500 is not a variable speed fan and operates at full speed at all times the inverter is functioning.

Though minor, at the rear of the unit, the space between the ether cable (line out) and the AC power cord grommet (see photo) is too tight. Even though I have small hands, I still found it necessary to use a flat tip device to depress the plastic ether cable release tab to disconnect the ether cable. This clearance problem could be alleviated if the chassis designers were to rotated the ether ports in their mounts by 180 degrees, placing the ether cable depression release tab opposite to that of the power cord grommet.

Included is a set of rack mount ears (see photo), pseudo dovetail, sliding rail kit (see photo) and shoes/chock (see photo) for freestanding. The steel rails and slides are of the non roller bearing type but still very functional. The two supplied plastic shoes for setting up the UPS in the vertical orientation can be separated (see photo) into four separate chocks for setting up the device in a horizontal non rack mount placement. For a heavy product, not having to be flush with the resting surface can be very helpful such that one can get their fingers underneath the unit for easer lifting.

The CyberPower PR1500 came supplied with a full complement of cables (see photo), two 9 pin serial cables, one USB 2.0 cable, one RJ-11 telephone cable, one RJ-45 CAT5 ether cable along with a CDROM containing the management software.

Last, a three display workstation (23", 24", 22") with an Intel i7 860 CPU, 8GB DDR3, XTC Memory Cooler, Radeon 5850, NEC USB3.0/SATA6 PCIe, AVer HDTV PCIe, 2TB RAID 01, 1.5 TB eSATA HD, Scythe Fan Controller, 3X 120mm fans, 3x 100mm fans, Ultra 600W PS, BT, GB ether hub, speaker bar drawing a total of 304Ws as per the UPS, reports having an estimated run time of 44 minutes with fully charged batteries.

Minus 0.25 for how the UPS output is electrically rated.
Minus 0.25 for high noise level of the AC inverter sub system.
Minus 0.25 for incomplete and too small a print used on the instructions.
Minus 0.25 for not supplying a hard copy of the user manual.

Apple MacBook Pro MC118LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop Review

Coming from a troubled Nvidia 8600M GT MacBook Pro - let me say that I was very skeptical buying another Apple Laptop with nVidia chip in it.

However, one weekend I decided to visit the nearest Apple Retail Store and check out the newly released models. My decision was mostly influenced by the reduced prices and increased battery life.

After some debating over buying the older model for same price or getting the latest one we settled on the newest mid end $1999 model with 2 GPUs. As is common I got a very nice resale price for my older MacBook Pro as it had AppleCare.

This generation is an all around improvement over the past generation unless you happen to be using ExpressCard on 15" model that is. In our case we never used the ExpressCard after attempting to use a eSATA card that did not work really well. And we have a few SD Cards that we figure we can easily use.

So on to the specific improvements over its predecessor -
1) Battery Life - I was very doubtful that the battery would last any longer than 4 hours at the maximum but was pleasantly surprised to find that for surfing/email type and the occasional CNN/Youtube flash videos getting 6+ hours was quite easy.

2) Prices - No doubt prices are the most reasonable Apple laptops have ever had. If you have no need for the dual GPU you can get the $1699 model which comes with a respectable 2.53Ghz Processor, 4GB RAM and a very capable 9400M GPU.

3) Operating Temperature - I have owned my share of laptops (Apple and non-Apple) and I have to say this one is the coolest - it never gets too warm and I can use it on my lap all the times - even encoding videos using the HandBrake application did not make it uncomfortably hot. However if I switch it to use the 9600M GPU it gets warmer even on regular use. It also runs very quiet - the fans may be coming on but I never notice.

Initially there was a lot of furor over Apple's downgrade of the Serial-ATA interface speed (used to transfer data to and from the hard disk) to 1.5Gbps but Apple quickly restored the speeds to 3Gbps - I do not however notice any difference with the 5400RPM hard disk.

About the display - it is gorgeous and colors are vibrant. I had the opportunity to use a calibrated color profile to make it look even better. However I find the display to be a little too much reflective but I am coming from almost always using matte display so I figure it's a matter of getting used to it.

Apple's use of Mini DisplayPort is ahead of its time - not many displays support it and so I had to buy a $30 DVI adapter - not a big problem but Apple should at the very least re-start bundling the adapter with the Pro machines. Also, another USB port in lieu of the SD Card Reader would be quite welcome - people can use the SD Card Reader for only SD Cards, but a USB port can be used for SD Cards as well as other peripherals.

That said, this generation is overall a very nice improvement - the great battery life itself is enough to convince one to upgrade.

[ Edited to add some findings after extensive use ]

After using it for a few months, I find a handful of things moderately annoying about this laptop -

1) The positioning of USB ports - both USB ports are on one side of the laptop and they are far too closely positioned to use both at once. For example I found I could not attach my Sandisk USB thumb drive and anything else at a time. And I don't have any irregular/unusual devices. They should really go back to having the ports on two sides or at least position them a bit more apart.

2) The Lid of the laptop is loose - this was known to me before but I never thought it would become annoying. I don't routinely use the laptop in bed but whenever I do it's annoying.

3) The amount of RAM Apple advertises (4GB) is not actually entirely usable - only 3.75GB is. So you lose 256Mb of RAM for the dual GPU.

Most of the consumer Reviews tell that the "Apple MacBook Pro MC118LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop" are high quality item. You can read each testimony from consumers to find out cons and pros from Apple MacBook Pro MC118LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop ...

NETGEAR ReadyNAS 100 Series 102 2TB (2 x 1TB) 2-Bay Network Attached Storage (RN10221D-100NAS) Review

The ReadyNAS I was shipped came with a pair of Toshiba DT01ACA100 drives - 7,200 RPM drives Toshiba touts as being engineered for high performance and low power for cooler operation. I compared it to my Synology DiskStation 2-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage (DS213j) using Seagate NAS drives (two ST3000VN000). As for price, the units are within a few bucks of each other if you buy them diskless.

HARDWARE COMPARISON:

This is where Netgear really shines. Both the ReadyNAS and the Diskstation sport single core 1.2 GHz processors and 512 MB DDR3 RAM. But ReadyNAS sports two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 compared to Synology's two USB 2.0 ports. ReadyNAS has an eSATA expansion port and Synology does not. ReadyNAS has quick tool-less disk access and a metal enclosure. To get to the Synology drives you need a screw driver to open the plastic housing. ReadyNAS drives are also hot swappable. Power consumption for Wake on LAN for ReadyNAS is 1.0W compared to Synology's 3.65W while hibernating.

SOFTWARE COMPARISON:

Synology rules the software arena for user interface and ease of management. While both use a web browser for management on the LAN, ReadyNAS has a web browser look and feel while the Synology has a more intuitive desktop theme. But theme aside, Synology is just plain easier to use. For instance, to access a movie/song/photo via my phone from the DiskStation I just installed the media server package on the NAS and the free apps on my phone. On ReadyNAS the same task requires installing Plex media server, creating a Plex account, buying the Plex app and managing more passwords. I still can't figure out how to hibernate and wake up the ReadyNAS other than pushing the buttons on the front of the unit so I haven't been able to take advantage of any power saving mode. Synology hibernation settings are quick and effective. Synology can be shut down or restarted through the web interface. I don't see those options on the ReadyNAS - to power down you need physical access to the device. Managing user permissions is much more straight forward on the DiskStation. And I could go on.

As for remote access, although both boxes required punching some holes in my firewall for media access away from home (using their respective android apps), Netgear's ReadyCloud was quick and painless to setup without any router changes. ReadyCloud allows remote file access and other management of the ReadyNAS via accessing Netgear's cloud website. Synology can be accessed via the web but you're connecting directly to the Diskstation (via an IP address or DNS service and opening a port on the router).

In the Android App arena, Synology uses a different app for files, video, photos and audio. They are all easy to install and use. ReadyNAS uses the Plex app for videos, photos and audio - which Plex charges you for. Synology's apps are all free.

AND THE WINNER IS:

If you are mainly interested in file sharing on a home or business network, your interactions with the interface of the NAS will likely be minimal and both the ReadyNAS and the DiskStation handle this simple task effortlessly. They both offer file synchronization, fast access, backups and easy accessibility through Windows Explorer or a DLNA compliant device. But because the ReadyNAS has better hardware features I would go with the ReadyNAS. But for everything else, including remote access, I prefer the DiskStation. I guess that makes it a tie.

UPDATE 10/2/13 - CUSTOMER SUPPORT:

Although I have not had to use Synology customer support, I did have the need to call Netgear after a third party application hung the ReadyNAS and displayed an error message to not reboot but to call the displayed number on the error screen. Even though it was Saturday morning I promptly got a live person who was very helpful in resolving the issue (a reboot oddly enough). Then, two days later I got a return phone call to make sure everything was still okay. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the best customer support from a consumer electronics company I have ever received.
