Product Description
No way! How can this compact 8" PA speaker put out enough punch to fill a large room? Impossible. Or is it? Back up, now. QSC packed a 1,000-watt powerplant into this little guy - 1,000-watt Class D power amp, so it's still lightweight enough to put in your car with ease. But how does it sound? It sounds like a million bucks. Really. We caught the K8 in action in a large room, and you've never seen so many jaws drop at the same time. It sound so good, you'll have trouble relating the little speaker your eyes see with the massive sound coming into your ears. The K8 is the real deal!QSC K8 8-Inch 1000 Watt Powered PA Speaker Review
I must preface this review by saying that I can't comment on using these powered speakers as a PA system; I bought a pair for my keyboard rig. They replace my old Mackie SRM450s, which I loved, but at 50+lbs each was getting tired of shlepping around (these are 27 lbs each). I don't miss the Mackies at all. The output from these is incredibly loud, crystal clear and punchy. They claim "1000 watts" but what's odd is that they don't give any qualifiers like you usually see ("+/- 3 db, 20 - 20K, @0.1% distortion"), just a plain & simple "1000 watts." Regardless, these speakers have incredible headroom. I've done gigs playing left-hand bass and am completely satisfied. Obviously, with an 8" woofer you will not get the lowest octave of bass. Also, they use a tuned port to extend the low-frequency response and there seems to be a "hump" at around 100 - 200 Hz that I compensate for with EQ.One characteristic of the K8 is that the smaller woofer gives a wider dispersion angle. On stage, I set them up angled in a bit, so both the stage and audience is covered. Comments from the audience are that they sound great, and the musicians I play with also comment on how they hear me perfectly (this was not the case with the Mackies).
The K8 has two inputs (each of them a "combo" XLR and 1/4" jack) that can be used simultaneously, each with a level control and pass-through; there is also an output that has both inputs mixed. One of the inputs is switchable between mic and line level, the other is line level only. There are some other cool features, like the ability to turn the power light on the front of the speaker to a "limit" indicator - this tells you when the onboard DSP acts to limit the woofer's cone excursion. I've yet to see this light flash, despite playing some punishingly loud gigs!
