So two weeks into an 8 week schedule (not as grueling as it sounds -- we only record two days a week) my old Zoom H4 recorder became inadequate to the task and after some panicked research and careful budget analysis got the DR-680 to replace it. I'm very happy with the unit -- the preamps are wonderfully quiet and the quality of the recording is excellent (48 kHz, 24 bit.) At present I'm only using the XLR inputs.

Things that could be better:
I'd say the menu system is a little klunky -- not horrible, not noticeably different than other solid state recorders, even. It just seems like there ought to be a better way to set things up.

It's a little annoying that phantom power is applied to connectors in pairs (so, for example, if you want phantom on input 1, it also gets set on input 2.) I just have this obsessive-compulsive desire for my inputs to be set up with no gaps. In a two-mic setup where one wants phantom and the other doesn't it means my inputs are going to be channels 1 and 3 -- it's my own psychological problem.

Things I like:
It's nice that you can preset up to 3 filename prefixes for the files that get recorded -- we shoot multiple episodes in a single day and life is just easier if you can switch the prefix to help sort out which files belong to which episode in post. It could still be done without presets, but it's nicer to just do a couple of menu choices to set up for the next episode.

I like that there are dedicated buttons to enable the active channels and stereo mix. Other recorders I've used require fiddly menu settings to enable/disable channels. With the DR-680 you still have to go into a menu, but from the menu you can use the dedicated buttons to make your choices.

I totally love that the Mark button puts an edit mark into the file that is visible in my editor (Audition.) The sound guy routinely hits mark at the start of each take and I can skip from mark to mark easily in the editor. Makes my life so much better.

Things that are things:
At the end of the first day the sound guy almost went into Hulk mode trying to turn the unit off. In a move that in retrospect makes perfect sense, Tascam disables the power off function if the recorder transport is not stopped. He was trying to power down from Pause and the recorder wasn't having any of it.

The Mark button mentioned above does not operate if the screen that lets you set levels is up. You have to go to the main screen for it to work.

Conclusion: the most important result from a recorder is the sound. This recorder makes tracks that sound great. The tracks are noticeably quieter than the Zoom recorder or the internal audio on my camera (Sony FS-100) In addition to sounding great this recorder has some features that make operating it nicer/easier. I'm happy with the unit and am happy to recommend it.
