I have more than 100 hard disk drives and arrays laying around. It's the bane of my existence. Everywhere I step there are hard drives and cables. I've tried, used and owned just about every brand of hard drive system in use. I like many of them. I just need to get rid of the rest, but I LOVE the PROMISE Pegasus R6. Here's why...

The LightPeak technology that provides the underpinnings of Thunderbolt is amazing. Thunderbolt isn't widely adopted and it's expensive, but there's no chance anyone would deny it's very, very fast. It's faster than USB 3.0 or Firewire 800.

The R6 supports multiple RAID configurations. It comes RAID 5 right out of the box and ready to connect to your Mac. There are a few things you should know right off the bat. The drive doesn't come with a cable. At this price, that's almost criminal. So have a Thunderbolt cable ready if you want to use the R6 on arrival. The next thing you should know is that it takes about 10 hours for the drive to self-configure once you plug it in. After the lights stop flashing, the unit will show up on your Mac like any other drive.

I bought my Pegasus with 12TB of storage - two of that reserved for data redundancy. The unit houses six, two-TB 3.5-inch hard drives. They spin at 7200 RPM and are fast enough for video, audio, you name it. The R6 has that brushed aluminum Mac look that most Mac peripherals use and it's quite handsome - not that it matters. The footprint is similar to other drive bays on the market which hold 12TB of data.

As a photographer, my main concern with one of these drives is that they are safe and fast. While I've only had a week to test the R6 so far, I feel like it's both. There's absolutely no denying the fact it's fast. How fast? REAL fast. As in so fast that you don't need a fancy software benchmarking tool to know it. I used to chuckle when I'd read posts from the pixel peepers bragging that their hard drive was x milliseconds faster than their pal's hard drive. This isn't one of those kinds of things. This drive is many times faster than most drives I've tested.

I have some fast SATA3 drives and the Pegasus R6 is AT LEAST four times faster. You read that right four times. I should mention these are internal drives. To further put this in perspective, all my new computers shipped with SSD drives. The R6 is almost twice as fast!!!

I tried to do some real world tests using the software and files I'd normally work with to establish how the R6 worked. I finished up with one of my favorite tests. I transferred the equivalent of a CD full of data in less than four seconds.

We ended up buying six of these R6 units so I was able to test their ability to daisy chain. I only tried it with two units but it worked flawlessly and didn't appear to slow down transfer rates.

I didn't test the software that came with the R6 nor did I change the RAID configuration to RAID 0 which should make the drive even faster. While I didn't quite get 800 MB/s performance promised by Promise's marketing department, I got close.

There are a few caveats. This unit only works with Macs. The drive is noisy - not that much more than other drives I've tested, but too noisy for those in a pro-audio environment to use this without additional sound protection. The other thing to note is the high price. Like the old guy at the race shop used to tell me when I was building hot rods, "Speed cost money son - how fast can you afford to go?" In this case I think it's worth it.

If you're a photographer or film maker looking for the fastest data transfer rates available in a device that just plugs into the Mac without the addition of a special card, I believe the Pegasus is the drive you are looking for.

I use an Apple iPad about 6 to 8 hours a day. I own an iPad 2 and 3 and now this new iPad Air version. My main reasons for updating were that I literally fill up my 64 GIG iPad every day or two with videos and photos that I shoot. Having this larger version at 128 GIG allows me to work longer and add more to my iPad. In addition this new version is much lighter and easier to use all day long. Even though the battery is smaller in capacity than my iPad 3 the battery life is longer and it is very noticeable. This is because the faster A7 CPU and the motion chip actually use less power.

I immediately noticed the increase in speed. The unit connects to the WIFI faster, synchs with iTunes faster, downloads emails faster and speeds up your web browsing. The differences are very noticeable and enjoyable as a user. The dual speakers are a nice change but I also use a lot of Bluetooth speakers to enhance the sound of the iPad.

In my video I do a size and weight comparison to an iPad 2, an iPad 3 and the iPad Air. I also show how the basic set up takes place and for advanced users you can just speed through that portion of the video. The iPad 2 weighs 1 pound 5 1/8 ounces, the iPad 3 weighs 1 pound 7 1/8 ounces, and the iPad Air weighs 1 pound and � ounce. The iPad Air is narrower but has the same screen size. The left and right edges of the iPad are thinner on the sides of the useable screen and you can see that in the video.

Here are the key improvements for me:

* Much faster when browsing the web

* Lower CPU and motion chip power consumption that makes the smaller/lighter internal battery last longer! This is very noticeable!
* As usual a beautiful high resolution retina screen with 2048 by 1536 resolution at 264 pixels per inch. You can see the difference in the photos, videos and reading quality of the screen.
* Dual speakers in the bottom
* Free high quality Apps

Overall this is a superior product that really outperforms the older iPads that I have. I was disappointed that the new iPad Air did not have the home button with the fingerprint sensor built in. Since I have used it with my iPhone 5S I have really become attached to it and it just seems like a way to cheapen the unit and be more competitive instead of showing and using the enhanced technology. I would have paid a little more for the iPad Air with that sensor.

This is still a 5 star product and I recommend it as a very good tablet.

Akai Professional EWI4000S Electronic Wind Controller Review

I just received my EWI4000S and already love it. First, some quick background.

I am a software engineer by trade and a hobbyist musician. I minored in music focusing on Jazz. I play clarinet, alto sax and flute.

After reading numerous reviews and having tried various wind synths starting back around 1988, I finally decided the 4000s was the instrument to go with. I never like the other instruments requiring a separate sound module and found the built in synth on the 4000s just what I was looking for. I was concerned about reviews indicating the built in sounds were a bit thin, so I decided to buy from patchman music and add their sound library to the package. It was only another $50 so for $750, you get a great instrument, with nice sounds ready to go. As a bonus, they update the OS in the instrument and calibrate for you at no charge.

I set up the instrument with sax fingerings and found it fairly easy to adjust to the touch sensitive keys. The one area that I see needing a lot of work on my part is moving through the octaves. With rollers instead of a single octave key, this looks like the biggest hurdle. Even so, I was able to pull out a Charlie Parker solo book, and play much of the content albeit at a bit of a slower pace than the Bird. It was still encouraging enough to let me know that with some work, I should be able to sound pretty decent.

It's also a blast to be able to plug in headphones and play at all hours of the night without disturbing the family or neighbors. I have noticed a tiny bit of hiss on the headphones, but have not determined yet if it is a headphone issue or the instrument. I suspect there will be a tiny amount of noise since the internal synth is analog.

I have yet to work with the MIDI so I cannot comment on how well it works in that regard. There is also software that lets you modify or create new sound and download, however, this also requires a MIDI connection so I have yet to try this.

As another reviewer pointed out, there is no case available for this. Akai, are you listening? I have found most other EWI players suggesting a soprano sax case and if necessary, replacing the bottom with foam cut out for the EWI. I would prefer a custom case from Akai, but they have never had a case for any of their EWI's as I recall so I won't hold my breath.

Overall, an excellent and very expressive instrument, especially if you get the updates from Patchman.

Was difficult to get data cloned to my SSD. Finally figured out that I had to boot from USB and set the BIOS to legacy mode.

DVD drive makes a noise every now and then, even though there isn't a disk in there... not sure what's trying to access it. Is a DVD drive even necessary anymore? It's just added weight, to me.
