Sony UWPV1 Lavalier Microphone, Bodypack Transmitter & Portable RX Wireless System, Operating on TV Channels 42 to 45 Review

In the days of no money, we struggled with NADY wireless equipment and suffered mightily. Never again. The Channel 70 productions crew has been using these for a few months now and the units are solid performers. The one weakness is the mic clip. Way too fragile and very expensive to replace. We're looking for alternatives. Both the transmitter and receiver are solidly constructed with metal cases. The battery life is good, except in cold weather. The transmitter batteries last longer because the case is heated by the talent's body. The transmission is strong and clear out to about 150 ft. There has been no problem with interference except once when we had the Sony hand mic/transmitter set to the same frequency. Ooops. Our soundman keeps at least 8 AA's in a small plastic case velcro'd inside the hard case containing our audio gear. Before buying the Sony's, we looked at others in the same price range, but decided to stay an all Sony shop because we've never had a bad piece of gear from them.

VIZIO CN15-A5 15.6-Inch Laptop Review

While this computer is $999, go for it! Fantastic price for this piece of tech!

That said, I purchased this laptop before the discount, and even then I think it is a fantastic price for what you are getting.

The two most iffy parts about the computer:
1. The touchpad. Whew boy. Initial thoughts, "I love it!" 20 minutes later, "I completely LOATH it!" About 4-5 hours of use later, "Meh, it is ok." Firstly, the gestures with this thing are fantastic, very smooth, work flawlessly most of the time. No complaints there. Moving the mouse around is speedy and very sensitive, which is great as well. I haven't really had any of those glitchy jumps and such that were described in the earlier models. The issue is when you start clicking. I found that clicking wherever your finger lays on the touchpad is the most accurate way to go (though still not flawless). Moving your finger to the bottom of the touchpad often makes the mouse jump a little bit when you click, often making you miss what you are clicking if it is small (though this still happens a little when using the whole pad). However, the top 1/4 off the touchpad isn't really clickable because the buttons ARE actually at the bottom.
EDIT: I find that the bottom of the touchpad goes down into the case a LOT when you click on it. I am thinking the mouse moves when clicking near the base because the touchpad is actually flexing a decent amount, making your finger roll a little or something. Not a huge deal, kinda annoying but not too hard to get used to.

2. The keyboard is a little shallow, but very solid. The keys are bigger than average, and quite close together. This might take some getting used to, though I honestly love the layout of this keyboard. I miss my page up and page down buttons (EDIT: Though not labeled, holding FN and using arrow keys act as page up/down and home/end), but I can indeed make due without, though it really wouldn't have been hard for them to add as the have plenty of room. There is one annoying glitch with the keyboard where it sometimes registers a key twice. I have played with it a lot and it isn't my typing, the keyboard does indeed register key strokes twice here and there. It happened twice with typing the previous two sentences. Another small gripe is the shrunk up and down arrow keys. I would have been happier if they just shrunk them all, as shrinking just the up and down makes it a little awkward to use in video games because of the different size. However, like everything else, it isn't that hard to get used to. And if it REALLY bugs you, redefine your controls in-game to something else.

The rest of the computer I find superb. The frame is extremely solid, very little flex in the monitor (which is absolutely beautiful), not to mention the whole machine has a fantastic simplistic design. It is a little hard to open, though you will soon discover the required technique and can open it with one hand. Also, the edges of the computer are decently sharp and can leave marks on your wrists after even short periods of use.

For such a thin laptop, you get some decent guts for a fantastic price:
- Intel i7 ivy quad, 8 threads, with 2.3ghz clock and 3.3ghz boost. (Intel 4000 integrated graphics, but who cares? ;] )
- Nvidia 640m LE of which I found was a Kepler with DDR3 and 1GB vram(to those who care, as there is a Fermi and DDR5 version as well) Underclocked base to 500mhz, boo, but there are ways to remedy that. This thing ran Unigine in 720p with 2x antialiasing, full tesselation, 2x anisotropy, and full shaders without dipping into the single digits, though it got awfully close. It liked the framerates of 11-17 in the heavier areas (This isn't a good analysis by any means, but take what you can from it).
-8GB DDR3 1600. You're not going to be upgrading, but you shouldn't really need to.

Also to note, I have yet to see this thing get really hot, even running Unigine (though I didn't run it for more than a few minutes). If this thing starts to burn I will come back and say so. Secondly, I find the battery life is about 4-4 1/2 hours of basic web browsing and full brightness (though this thing is monitor plenty bright, even when half way dimmed).
EDIT: Computer seems to be cooled quite well. I have done some gaming (GTA IV, UT3 and the like) for a few hours. It does get a bit hot under the speakers, however I am overclocking the video card a little and it still stays around 68-70C, highest it has ever reached was 72C. Not bad at all for such a thin laptop.

So yeah, quick sloppy review by moi (I don't generally write them). I would recommend it because of the build quality, nice specs, and cheap price. The only determent is the keyboard glitch and getting used to the oddly sensitive mouse clicking.

Samson Technologies 1080p Handy Camcorder - Q3HD Review

(See addendum at the bottom for update)

The video sensor size of this unit is 1/3.2 inch. This is a miniscule sensor that can not possibly deliver high quality HD video.

To put it another way, if Blu-Ray video quality is a "10", an $800 HD camcorder is a "7", a cellphone is a "2" and this unit is about a "4" in video quality.

To put it yet another way, if you watch video from this unit on a computer and set the viewer to half size, the video looks great--sharp and detailed. Increasing the size to 100% doesn't seem to add much. Most of the quality issues are loss of detail, especially noticable in faces. Like all sensors, in bright light, quality is much better than dim.

Audio is top notch. The stereo separation is perfect--not too wide or narrow. The unit has pretty flat EQ in recording audio--just slightly hot on the treble end giving a bit of brightness, but this is mild. It can record 24 bit audio, which is very useful for live recording as it preserves audio detail even if the sound gets quiet.

It also has an interesting feature where it can be set to automatically turn down the gain if there's any clipping, but it is one way only--it won't turn the gain back up again. So you aren't getting artificial "automatic gain control" type changing of the gain, yet you avoid clipping. There is also the standard automatic gain control (constantly adjusting input gain to the volume level) which is useful for recording voice, interviews, classroom lectures, etc. Manual gain control is limited to either "high input" or "low input"--there is no input level control. Bottom line: the audio recording is a huge success, with very high quality stereo reproduction.

Battery life is about 2 hours of continuous recording, with the display on. Unfortunately there is no way to turn off the display, so it just stays on and uses up battery power. Hopefully this can be fixed in a firmware update.

So we end up with great audio, and fair video. For my application--recording my band's gigs, this is all I need to see how we look live, and to hear excellent and detailed audio. There aren't any other alternative products for great audio + video in this price range. You just have to realize that you get what you pay for in video quality.

TIPS AND TRICKS:
1) My unit was randomly stopping recordings until I updated the firmware, so suggest doing that off the Zoom website.

2) 1080p recording is noticeably better than 720p on this unit, so would definitely record at 1080p.

3) Be sure to set the battery type correctly to either alkaline or rechargeable, or the unit can shut off prematurely thinking the batteries are dead.

4) It's almost impossible not to get fingerprints on the lens--be sure to clean it just before you start recording. There's an excellent product called LensPen which is quick and very effective.

5) The "glass" on the user screen display on the back side is actually soft plastic and it scratches very easily.

6) The "concert lighting" setting desaturates the colors, while the "dark" setting pumps up the video gain.

A quick tip about the HandyShare software that comes with it. It is not a video editing suite by any means and is actually quite primitive. But it does a few things very well--you can trim video clips and it doesn't re-encode them, so it retains the original video and audio quality. It can save the audio separately. It can also normalize audio (adjust it to full volume) without re-encoding the video. It does not join video segments, however.

OVERALL: Perfect for applications where audio quality is a higher priority than video quality. There aren't any other units currently in this price range out there which can do that. If you want pristine audio AND video, you'll need to spend much more, investing in a top quality camcorder with external microphones.

ADDENDUM: After a while I noticed a problem: with long recordings, the unit randomly stops recording. I tried multiple memory cards (including up to Class 10), new batteries, tried all settings. Not better with the latest Firmware 1.15. Finally I returned the unit for a replacement. The replacement unit had the same problem! I use this to record my band so need it to record at least 45 minutes. I would find the unit had often (but not always) turned itself off somewhere in the 45 minute set, so I'd keep losing the rest. Sadly, I have returned the 2nd replacement unit, and am now looking for another option. Hopefully a future firmware update can fix this. Until then, I have lowered my rating to 1 star.

Alpen 20-60x80 w/45 degree EP, waterproof Spotting Scope Review

I shopped around to improve on my Celestron 65mm scope. I was looking into mid-priced scopes - no more than $500. I came across two internet articles by professional scope viewers who enthusiastically recommended this Alpen scope. I was surprised at how well it was rated given that it doesn't use specialized glass nor expensive coatings. It uses BAK-4 glass and fully multi-coated optics, however, and they rate it as high as some scopes costing twice as much.

I really like this scope. I use it on a mid-priced Manfrotto tripod with a trigger-gun head for easy viewing. I'm a bit particular and will someday move up again to a high-end scope, but in the meantime I have no regrets over this scope. While others claim that their views at 60X are every bit as clear and detailed as at 45X, I cannot agree. I find that the maximum "sweet spot" is about 50X. That is to say, the view at 50X is as good as at a lower zoom setting. Above 50X and the view necessarily dims a bit. On clear days that's no problem and maxing out the zoom was fine. But if there's shade or high humidity, maximum zoom will only magnify it.

The other day I was viewing some waterfowl on a lake about 100 yards away. It was a warm day with mid-level humidity. When I zoomed out to 60X, I couldn't fine focus the birds since the scope magnified the heat waves from the humidity. Backing down a bit helped. I also had the opportunity of viewing birds at about 60 yards with a Kowa scope. I admit the Kowa presented a terrific view. My Alpen didn't match it but it came close. But then again, the Kowa cost over 4 times as much!

Bottom Line: There's no scope on the market in its price range that can touch this Alpen scope - even spending four hundred bucks more won't get you a better scope.
